OK, folks, here's a slightly different take on a contest for you....

Submit your most stunning banana photograph to this thread, with a comment line stating cultivar or species. One entry per person, and I reserve the right to ask you for a high-res version of the photo, and your name.

There will be four winners of the January Photo Contest, and these lucky people will have their photographs published in the January issues of the new magazine Bananas Quarterly, which will be published by the International Banana Society.

The contest will be open for submissions until 31 January 2009, at 11:59 pm Ecuador Time. The four winners will be announced in the first week of February, and published in the flagship issue of the magazine.

EDIT: THIS CONTEST IS NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED, IT BEING FEBRUARY 1 AND ALL.

GO!

Stumpy - the best Banana photo you have in your collection. Subscription details and whatnot are up to Jarred; I think we're waiting until this issue is close to complete to solicit the subscriptions. I can tell you that at this point, a year of Bananas Quarterly will cost $20.

Thanks mskitty! I have to get one of these. I will also try to get it to variegate like that at some point.

I can see this is going to be a tough job deciding which photo to place in the magazine first. That's a beautiful laterita, Brent! So many to choose from, and don't forget the Ensete perrieri plant Jeff just posted. It is in the "Trying again with Ensete perrieri (from RPS)." thread. Gorgeous!

A contest combining two of my favorite hobbies? What an excellent surprise! Here's my stab.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc162/imaginati/banflower1.png

This photograph was more about composition than subject, but it still turned out to be one of my favorites. I regret not being able to identify the species/cultivar, though I'd greatly appreciate it if one of our resident experts could give a suggestion as to what it could be.

Hi-res JPEG available on demand. :)

Ahhh, Mskitty...your shot of nanners,..comes close to my level of banana pics. "The best photo that I have ever taken"...looks like it could also be from any ol' WallyWorld in lower NM? Closest to purty nanners that many of us in Challenged Zones, will ever see? But. ..Mskitty......these ain't gonna grow, unless you plant them the right-side up?

Pitangadiego... that is one fantastic macro shot..! Almost Sci-fi. Looks like someone/something, who/dat 'contacted' the VLA (Very Large Array in NM).

Yes, I agree, my rodents very gluttonous,:lurk: they eat almost all vegetation. When I left them at a window, to get warm on the sun they have started to taste my bananas which grew there. I am assured that if it to allow it to eat, they will eat it completely. Here such they bright. And so we feed with their tomatoes and cucumbers, even a banana peel and very much we love them. I heard that in any country they are used in food, and by them very much even tasty but so the life is arranged. The best regards!:bananas_b:0517:

How do we get a subscription to the magazine????

Bananaman88
01-26-2009, 03:55 PM
Jack,

To my knowledge, we have not started compiling a subscription list as of yet. Several of us are currently writing articles for the magazine. Really, finding businesses willing to advertise with us seems to be all that is holding us up at the moment. If you are interested in becoming a part of the magazine contributor crew, contact MediaHound (Jarred) and let him know.

lorax
01-26-2009, 05:42 PM
Jack, when we are 100% sure that the magazine will be printed (as Brent says, it's an advertiser issue at the moment), Jarred will put up either a thread or a whole other site dedicated to getting subscriptions for the magazine. At that point, you can submit your pertinent details and you'll know who to PayPal or send a cheque to.

I don't know why I only have this photo in such a low resolution compared to what it should be, but here is my submission for the contest.

Musa 'African Red' variegated male bud among papaya and (it's own) banana leaves taken at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando Florida in August 2005.

theres lots wrong with this pic but i love the over all color and the radial nature of it so I'm submitting it any way even if it doesn't stand a Chance of winning

Was this contest officially closed last night?

From the first post in this thread:

The contest will be open for submissions until 31 January 2009, at 11:59 pm Ecuador Time.

From the post lorax made last night:
Thank you all, the contest is officially closed!

Winners will be announced sometime next week.

The first post should probably be edited when/if the contest is closed so that subsequent entries are not submitted. Not everbody reads all five pages of the discussion thread. Just my $.02.

Good luck everybody!

Harvey

And that's a big fat WHOOPS from chronologically-challenged me.

Of course, the contest is open until TONIGHT at midnight Ecuador time.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that! :D I will work (and goof off, if I have time) any day of the week and can't keep track very well and frequently have to ask my wife and others what day of the week it is and/or what the date is. When I had an office job, it wasn't a problem.

Good luck to all the participants of this awesome contest. There were a lot of amazing pictures. I sympathize with Lorax for having to decide on the winners. :ha:

There have been some great photos submitted for this contest so far. However, the first thread states that there is to be one entry per person. If everyone would please stick to that, it will make judging much easier for those of us who will be doing it. Thanks everyone, and keep those awesome photos coming!

Oops, I just realized that I have violated the rules!! Do I need to take one down? I'll take the variegated 'High Color Mini' out of consideration then. Sorry 'bout that! :nanadrink:

So what pics were chosen?

OK, the three judges (Brent, Tog, and Myself) have deliberated long and hard, so here in no particular order are the winners of the contest and what we said about them. If you're wondering why we three are judges, I am a professional designer, Tog was a professional photographer, and Brent is a horticulturist.

1.) Pitangadiego- Unknown variety flower close up

Brent said: I love the detail of this photo. Nice, crisp shot.
Tog said: Overall very good colors.
Beth said: The contrast of the colours, the composition, and the subject matter are fascinating; I love how the stamens draw the eye across and up the flower bud.

2.) Inoneear - Brazilian Unfolding

Tog said: Good centre of interest macro shot.
Beth said: Stunning macro composition, very interesting, and good movement in the background. It's also an good example of a pure monochrome composition.

3.) Simplybananas - Look Up

Brent said: To me this one has great composition and I love the color.
Tog said: Very good composition using the p-stem as a leading line.
Beth said: An interesting forced perspective, and I like the radial symmetry towards the crown of the plant.

In fourth place, things got a bit more confused.... But since it's my contest and I can do this, I'm going to be arbitrary.

4.) HarveyC - Bees

Brent said: Close in the running
Tog said: Good subject matter
Beth said: Bees!

BabyBlue's "Cali Gold", Pharazon's "Ice Cream", and BigDog's "African Red" were all contenders, and judges were disappointed at the withdrawal of BigDog's "Variegated HCM" and Rmplmnz's "Praying Hands Fruit."

Winners will be published when we finally have enough advertisers to print the magazine.

Great entries from everyone! It was certainly a tough decision to make. Now, if we could only get some darn advertisers signed up so we can print the magazine!!!
