View Full Version : Velvutina germination?

On Jan 7th I planted a dozen Velvutina seeds that had been dry. I soaked them for about 36 hours and than rinsed them in a 10% bleach solution, rinsed off the bleach and planted them in sterile, moist seed starter soil.

Two questions... Is there any way to guess what the germination time is going to be? If I use cinnamon as a fungacide, is there an amount per area I should use or is this one of those season to taste things?

Thanks

r3tic, you can just sprinkle the cinnamon as though you wanted to just cover the surface with the thinnest layer. Too much won't really hurt anything, but too little may not be as effective. Germination times are impossible to determine with any reliability. Moisture, heat, seed freshness, all kinds of variables enter into the equation. Good luck!

Hi r3tic, on my experience with Musa velutina, with viable sds, it took me anywhere between 20 to 30 days for the sds to germinate. The day temp was about 100+F and night about 80+F. I didn't bother with any fungicide and used a commercial seeds mix which was moist. I sow the seeds into a clear plastic box which was sealed with its lid.
From the time of the germination, it took 10 months to flower. They were grown in a pot. Surely one of the most satisfying species to have.
All the best to your sds. :0517:

I definitely recommend using something to help avoid damping off. I have used professional seed mix and still had seeds damp off. If i were as lucky as my pal Tog, I wouldn't worry about it. But I have lost too many seedlings.
