I'm Dan Lindsay, a 9-year resident of Hawai‘i living with my wife just north of Hilo on Hawai‘i Island on 4.6 acres. I'm a retired school teacher from Washington State, loving the rural lifestyle I now enjoy. My property was once cane land which was in pasture from sometime in the '80s till I got it in 2000. I'm planting a sort of mixed orchard on some of the land.

I have a few old Williams-type bananas which were on the property when we bought it, and about 30 Brazilian Apple bananas I've planted myself. I also have a brand-new Silk Fig and a Kluoy Kai (Thai) that I got from Ano Taglitz at Gaianursery down in Puna.

I'm interested in getting some of the ancient Hawai‘ian varieties, but all I ever see in the garden stores or nurseries are Williams and Brazilian Apple. Anybody have any ideas for me?

Welcome to the site Dan. Pretty sure there are a few folks from around Hilo and Puna on the board, so hopefully they can offer some assistance to you. This is definitely the right place :)

Welcome, Dan!

Talk about ancient Hawaiian varieties, have you found an Ae-Ae yet? Only the royals used to have them.

Dan,

The farmer's markets usually have a few folks selling plants. Do might do well at the Makua farmer's market on Sundays. Its on Hwy 130 heading out of Pahoa on the left as you are headed to the coast.
