I have a friend who bought a home near Houston Texas that came landscaped with some bananas. She tended to them, they grew and they flowered!

Then along came hurricane Gustav. The bananas were leveled.
They grew back only to be hit with the first snow in like 60 years or so for that area.

Only time will tell if the corms survived.
BTW, they look like Orinoco to me. What do you think?

Probably is Orinoco. Was this from the snow we had earlier in the week? Where does she live in Houston? I'm just south of the city.

Yes from this past snow. She's in Deerpark.

Oh my gosh .... tell her not to give up!! We're rooting for her!
Hmm.... the more I stare at that word.. 'rooting' ... the more it looks like it should be spelled different for that sentence. I don't have time to look it up. :ha:

Jeeez. I'm so glad it only snows on the volcanoes here.
Cookie - "Rooting" for you is the correct spelling.

I thought I had a closeup of Orinoco in the gallery but alas it does not look like I ever uploaded one. This is a bunch of Orinoco I grew once though:

Not to make too light of it, but they look like ICE Cream.:ha: It is sickening to see though, seriously.

Those plants will be just fine. Orinocos are tough suckers(pun intended).

They'll be fine. That's a pretty neat picture though, green banana leaves covered by snow! BTW, it snowed pretty good there in 2004, and when I lived there in 1982 we got out of school early because of snow. It's rare, but it happens every few years.

The snow didn't seem to hurt my bananas at all. Unfortunately, Friday morning there was a pretty heavy frost and most all of my banana leaves got burned. Luckily, the pseudostems were still wrapped and I only got leaf damage.
