about a month ago i received a 3 foot african red and a velutina from aloha tropicals both plants the pstems dried up and rotted off at the ground level i dug up the corm and they r hard yet and have a bunch of white points growing out of them about the size of a fifty cent piece around i think they r new stems that r gonna emerge i have them planted in side in huge pots in the entrance way of my home in front of frnch doors and large windows under grow lamps and i only water them maybe once a week if that to avoid root rot. are they rotting or is this normal???? i live in wisconsin so it was kind of cold when i got them in the mail about 35 degrees is it saft to have corms shipped to me in winter or should i wait till spring cause now it is below zero and we got lots of snow also im looking for a large thick mat of african red with lots of pups for a very larger planter in my house i cant wait years for mine to get invasive someone please help me i have been looking for the african red for awhile and now it going to hell on me and im stressed right out lol

Shawano, eh? I used to travel that area a lot back in the late 70's and early eighties. Beautiful country and yes, it is cold! I have an African Red and Steve in France (actually Maryland now, I think) has some. Ask him this spring. I will be putting a pup into TC this summer when mine pups, to make sure that everyone who wants one can get it.
Your corm may have gone dormant for awhile. I would not water it for several weeks. If the corm is hard, that's good. Let it do its thing as there is plenty of moisture inside the corm. When it is ready to do so, it will put up new shoots. Patience is vital.

Note to modertors, perhaps this one should be put under the new Plant Health thread.
