I was wondering if anyone knows of mainland sellers of apple banana fruit. My family loves the variety but we weren't sure if they were available. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard

I take it you are from Hawai'i and are referring to the local "apple" banana? If so, then on the mainland those are what are called 'Brazilian', you can buy the plants rather easily but you will not be able to find the fruit anywhere. If you do find the fruit, it would be from a local grower in Florida or California (likely) at a farmers market or something....but very unlikely to find anywhere. Hawai'i does not currently export any bananas.

These are found at our regional grocery store Bi-Lo in South Carolina.
They are great.
Hope this helps!

I have found what they called Manzano at Seafood City in Carson Ca. I wasn't that impressed with them. They also carry Saba, again not that impressed. If you're near me in So Cal I can send you a hand of Hawaiian Apples once or twice a year and I usually have pups potted and ready to plant. lmk
Edit, just read your title and it sounds like you're in Tulsa?

I have purchased bananas with the same label at both "Trader Joes" and "Vons" markets in San Diego, CA. They are only available for a few weeks. The ones from Vons were not good -- probably picked under-ripe. The Trader Joes were better but still poor taste compared to those grown in local backyards.

Most of the Oriental Markets carry them here in Salinas or San Jose, Calif.
Mitchel: Do you let your Manzano ripe really well? Soft to the touch before you eat them?
It''s different taste but much better than the regular chiquita brand. In my opinion. Of course each one of us has different taste buds and favorites.
I can imagine how much better they would taste if they are tree ripened. Like my apples and persimmons.

I did wait until they were fully ripe but I think they may have been picked to early because they stayed kinda rubbery even when soft. The flavor was lacking too. I may just be spoiled from eating my own bananas. As a matter of fact I don't even buy store bought bananas anymore. I'd rather wait for my own to ripen on the plants!

Just as a note to avoid confusion, what is called 'Apple' and 'Manzano' on the mainland is a completely different variety than the Hawaiian 'Apple'. Hawaiian 'Apple' bananas are either 'Brazilian' (aka 'Tall Brazilian') or 'Santa Catarina' (aka 'Dwarf Brazilian' and 'Prata Ana') of the Pome subgroup. 'Manzano'/mainland 'Apple' are a type of Silk. Both are AAB but from different subgroups and are very different plants.

If it's going to be my banana tree I'd wait until some of the bananas turn yellow before I'd cut it down.

Now I know. I thought they taste different. When we were in Hawaii last year, I bought a bunch of apple bananas on the fruit stand and I thought they taste weird even shaped different. Now I know.
