O.k. folks, I decided to make some changes this year so I chopped all the scraggledy p-stems down to have plenty of room and so my yard wouldn't look like a halloween display.
I found blooms in several of my P-stems :( D.brazilian ,Ice cream , and raja puri were the ones that I regretted losing.

The Ice cream with the bloom in it also fell the wrong way and took out a palm :(

Thanks, Pete, you make zone 9 look tropical! ;) My bananas are slowing down, but still green.

Btw...the reason there's a vertical slice in these is that when I saw the meristem had moved up, I became agitated and chopped into it ..lol

Don't blame you, I'd have cried in my beer over that one. Good job on the greenhouse, I wish that would be enough protection up here,I'd make one just like it.

Those photos belong in the wiki! They are very instructional, not only regarding loss of fruit(@*$^#) but especially the growth cycle of the plant. Check out the progressive spiral from the outer edge down to the flower head.

That sucks! My condolences to you and your bananas. Good to see what it looks like though, so it was a sacrifice in the name of science.

I've had some questions about blooming so I'll attempt to explain it. Keep in mind, I can just barely explain where peanut butter comes from ,so you'll hafta accept this for what it is.
When the plant is close to blooming , the meristem moves up the p-stem and it is the 'last leaf', the driving force, the last bit of life that travels through and out of the p-stem in the form of bracts, blooms and fruits. It can be seen as a solid circle in the center of the other leaf sheaths and looks like its made of corm .

In a plant that's still pushing leaves, you can see the up-and-coming leaf rolled in one side of the previous leaf sheath or stem. And , you could see the leaf structure....rolled leaf, stem material, chanels....

I hope this made some sense. If so, seek psychiatric consultation. If not, don't worry, hopefully another member will step in and give a better description.

Thanks, Pete, those pictures help show that very well. The first one (ill-timed blommer) is what variety? It seems to be a small plant.
Good luck with pup production!

Thanks for the interesting pics...very educational, but yet I'm sorry for the loss.
What is the diameter of that big one? I bet it was huge.
