As I type this, it is sprinkling a wet liquid from the sky; something they used to call rain, now it seems to be a miracle.

The forecast calls for a rainy weekend, which is desperately needed here in the flatlands of California. It does not appear that any snowpack of consequence will result as the storm appears to be pretty warm.

Even so, with only 1 very light day of rain here since February, this is a blessing for us here. I have taken the chance and turned off my irrigation system.

Hi John,

I was just thinking the same thing. I was just checking out my bananas as I think one of my unknowns (same type as the one that bloomed in September) sent a paddle leaf up last week and I keep wondering if this sorry thing is finally gong to bloom. The winds have picked up quite a bit in the past half hour and I thought it seemed similar to some of the cooler days I've experienced in Hawaii. Feels nice, doesn't it?

Harvey, John - I hope you have plenty of gentle soaking rain - none since February - sheesh!!! Nothing torrential on dry ground please!

Have some of ours - please! We have had 72 inches this year which is light (last year 81 inches), and 16 inches this month and it is still raining with thunderstorms every night. The nanas are doing their best to shlurp it up, but with the cooler temps (75f tonight) they can't take it all up and everything is squelchy.

Thanks, Cassie. I would guess that since last February we had about 1" of rain total....extremely dry. We did have about 0.1" of rain a couple of weeks ago, when I had alfalfa hay on the ground. That was enough to cause about $3,000 of crop damage! Now we're doing with crops and I'm ready for some good rains. I do still have 3 bunches hanging so I'd rather have some rain than frosty weather (we don't usually get that until December or later).

Oh man - when you have had a drought, why does it always finally rain at harvest time? Did you see that the Australian government has banned the use of the word drought in the media? They have to use the phrase dryness!!

Cassie,

Thanks. It looks promising. We are nearly through out harvest cycle this year and the last corn crops should be nearly complete.

Its too bad the Austrailian's can't call a drought a drought. The dryness doesn'y really convey the situation.

Like when Its been too long between beers......my throat is going through a drought, dryness is between sips. :ha:

Thanks again.

John, hope the Trick or Treaters in your area missed the rain tonight. My son is over there spending the night with a school friend and it started raining pretty good around 9pm or so here and I was hoping that they had finished. Did you happen to see someone dressed as King Peter? ;)

Our Trick or Treaters came out high and dry.

Missed King Peter though.

We shut down about 8:15 as no one seems to be coming by, but we handed out a lot of candy.

I did notice some of the kids had some real attitudes not associated with the spirit of Halloween. Lots of comments regarding how much they got......I guess the sense of entitlement is going to be with us for some time....too sad.
