View Full Version : Yellow leaves.

I have an area of banana trees, that the leaves are turning yellow prematurely and dying fairly rapidly.
It's the lower leaves only. The new leaves are unaffected.
Some of the plants now have maybe only 4-5 green leaves w/ 3 or more yellow.
Pups on those trees have come up and appear fine.
Many of my other plants in other areas are unaffected.
And this did not happen last year with the plants in the same area.
Could this be under fertilization? Over? Over watering? Indirect poisoning (lawn chemicals or household chemicals).
I did a search and could not find anything.
Your thoughts.
Thanks

I've had a similar issue with some of my basjoo. I've been concerned they either aren't getting enough water or that perhaps I gave them too much Nitrogen earlier this year.

In my experience, early yellowing is a water issue - too little; or too much, causing root rot, which has the same effect as too little water. Too few roots means less water uptake. If new growth is healthy, I wouldn't be to concerned. Banana leaves show stress, but generally the stress you see is from something that occurred a week or two ago, not yesterday.

I notice it seems to happen to mine after splitting pups, so that makes sense.
I think some of mine are definitely not getting enough water. My soil is already on the sandier side (which I plan to improve over the winter) and I have several bananas planted near wooded area in the back of my lot - so they are in competition with the trees themselves. I probably need to up my watering back there or move the bananas into the yard a bit. The bananas that aren't competing with the trees all do great (better soil and more water).

Mine must be too much.
The plants are in the vacinity of the roof water runoff.
Last year was wetter than this though

How well does your soil drain? I have one Basjoo right next to a gutter spout and it's the largest in my yard - no doubt due to all the 'free' water. BUT - the soil drains well too. If you have clay, that might be your problem.
