I recently got a small Musa basjoo which I have to keep indoors for the winter. Does anybody know an easy way to rid my pot of gnats living in the soil? I tried a systemic insecticide once and it stunk too much for indoor use. With the soil being constantly damp, the gnats multiply like mad and are very annoying.

You need to catch the adults and kill the eggs at the same time. For the adults: Victor "Poison-Free" Indoor Fly Trap. There's two in a box, sold at most garden centers and departments. For the eggs and larvae: any pyrethrin (Chrysanthemum oil extract) will do, I happen to like Bayer Powerforce. It contains the synthetic pyrethrin "Cyfluthrin" and can be used on fruits and vegetables up to the day of harvest: Bayer Advanced ™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Concentrate (http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Powerforce-Multi-Insect-Killer/concentrate.html)

I think you're watering too much. The soil shouldn't be constantly damp indoors.
