First off, great site. I came here from Gardenweb. Lots of smart people there but the navigation of that site sucks.

So here's my question: how many of you have been able to get a dwarf cavendish to fruit in a pot?

I have, and its a Williams. Williams are classified as cavendish type with fruits similar to the commercial cavendish. I used a 30 gallon tub which I got for $3.95 from a sale at OSH.

I have never produced blooms nor fruit from a Super Dwarf Cavendish. It put out 300 or more leaves, but no blooms. Left it out during the winter and died back to the soil level. It has now 10 pups. SDC are the bananas that I give away to friends as purely ornamental. I think it will only bloom here by accident in our zone.

I have dwarf cavendish, and mauritius. They haven't bloomed yet.

delenda, we still lack a lot of banana gurus to come over to this great site. Perhaps you can help us invite them over from garden web forum. My post that links to this site was deleted along with Mike's post about California gold.

'Super Dwarf' fruit very well given CONSTANT warm temps. They absolutly need to remain warm their whole lives, no cold at all, that will cause them to never bloom, but they do bloom and fruit quite nicely under optimal condtions.

I know 'Dwarf Cavendish' will also fruit in a pot, I know people who have done it before, its all a matter of just watering enough and keeping them warm.

Welcome to the board, Delenda!

I had one fruit a few years back, but it was in the ground.

Delenda,

below is one of four s.d.c. i spent 3 years and fruited four plants and still haven't eaten them.. my gh temps were less than favorable, 26-27f. i gave up and moved on to something i could grow to eat.. used 30 gal containers.

container grown to fruit, so far i've seen: super dwarf cavendish, dwarf cavendish, grand nain and ice cream..
folks grow for differnet reason as i grow for the sweetness of the fruit,
some grow for foliage.

<my2cents and thoughts>
what i've seen is that bananas can fruit in containers, the fruit and bunches will be smaller.

joereal,

So nice to see you here too! Glad I can finally get back in here. Is the picture the California Gold or the cavendish? Afraid I don't know much about the California Gold, can you tell us about it? I have only heard bits and peices here and there.

By the way, I was talking about a dwarf cavendish, not a SDC. I grew SDC for five years and finally gave up on it.

Mine is in a 30-gallon pot and growing like mad. Unfortunately, it'll have to come inside this winter as I live in Maryland. I have no idea what that will do its ability to fruit.

Seriously low-rent of Garden Web to delete your post for mentioning another site. No matter. It'll start showing up in Google searches and people will find their way here.

Interesting, I can still find the post NEW BANANA QUESTION BOARD over on the Garden Web site on page 2.

BUT if SPIKE is the guy running the banana board, I had run ins with him in the past and wouldn't put it past him. After our "discussions", I have some serious "questions" about SPIKE.

delenda, I am going to try to steer this discussion back on track for you.

I have only come across 1 fellow in my many years of growing bananas that could produce digital pics of his Dwarf Cavendish producing fruit in a container (and I can't seem to find the pics). What he told me is that it will fruit regularly at 4ft of trunk in a container and give about 20lb's of fruit. I now have one of his pups at my house. He also grows Grand Nain, which he said he likes better because it would give a few more hands (this in a container too fruiting at I think he said 6ft). And Ice Cream which he said would flower at 8ft in a container. This was in south florida so it wasen't what he couldn't grow them in the ground, he just liked to have them around the pool deck where they were protected from the wind and were pleasing to look at.

You will need a container that is at least 20 true gallons and have to keep the pups cut out. I am working on this same project right now. Trying to grow Dwarf Cavendish and Mauritius in containers. I am just a bit too cold in winter to leave a Cavendish out and expect it to come back with any reliability.

There is also a hydroponic store in San Franciso which has a Dwarf Cavendish growing in a clay pebble hydroponic sytem that fruits regularly. I personally saw fruit hanging on it on one visit but I didn't have my camera with me. But, below is a pic of it at a later time after they had harvested and the next pup was at about fruiting size. It was no more that 4ft trunk when I saw it with fruit on it.

bananalover - I'm not sure the trouble you are having understanding what the California Gold is all about?? That plant has probably been discussed more than any other here and all over the net. JoeReal had posted the whole "story" as it was writin by Jeff and others have trown there 2 cents in as well. Maybe you should request that the moderator create a forumn just for California Gold Discussion?
