:woohoonaner: Yahhooooo, I just got my first and likely only Ae Ae in the mail today and will no doubt go through all the previous posts about it I can find this week. My immediate problem is where to keep it for the winter. All my other bananas are in my north facing uninsulated glass front porch which I've converted to a greenhouse for the winter. It's about 12'x6' growing space with a 400 watt metal halide light with a 6' long light mover so all the plants in the growing area are getting good light. I also put down a layer of foam insulation on the floor and have an indoor rated oil filled elctric heater so I will be able to keep them pretty warm even at night during the coldest part of the winter(will post pics when I find my camera).
Will this be too bright for this plant or should I keep it in the house in a less bright area? Maybe I could keep it off to the side in the porch and maybe use an umbrella or something else to keep it a bit shaded. Any ideas/ thoughts would be appreciated. I really want to baby this thing........Thanks Bob:goteam::bananas_b

Congratulations! Mr. Bob,
Yes, your porch enclosure, supplemental lighting, and heating system will certainly work. Try to keep the enclosure at least 70°F for the first several weeks in order to let its roots get established. You can lower to 60° - 65°F after that.

The Ae'-Ae that I got for my anniversary in mid-July has produced only one new leaf. At the time our average temperature was around 70°F. August- early September, was just a little better - 75°F, with occasional stints in the 80s and low 90s a couple of times. Now we have nights that dip into the high 30s.

God luck on your new plant!

well Bob you are in for a treat the Ae Ae is just about the prettiest banana i have i grown mine in doors all year round i have 4 1600ft candle Sylvania wide spectrum lights on it and its growing faster then any other banana i have its grown 12" in the last 4 weeks its a good thing i have 23ft ceilings LOL well thats what i do with mine so i don't see why yours wont grow sounds like a good set up to me they do appreciate some humidity although mine being in the desert south west gets only about 20% most of the time i do have it setting on a bed of gravel that i keep filled with water and my orchids are all around it so I'm sure that helps too
