Since it's chestnut shipping season, I'm back to spending more of my time using my desktop PC. I've been running Firefox 3.0 on my notebook for a few months and like it pretty well. However, I'm still runing MSIE 7 on my desktop and was thinking of changing. A friend told me recently that he had started using Chrome and liked it. However, he is a career technie and often overlooks mentiong little problems with such things.

If you're using it, I'd love to hear what you think about ti.

Thanks,

Harvey

After one day there's been 29 view but no replies. Nobody using Chrome? My friend had strongly recommended Firefox 3.0 but now says he likes Chrome even better.

For those that don't know, which apparently is everybody here at IBS besides myself...lol, Chrome is the browser introduced by the fly-by-night outfit called Google.

You can download it here: Google Chrome - Download a new browser (http://www.google.com/chrome)

It reportedly is much faster than even Firefox 3.0.

I am still using MSIE on my desktop but have been using Firefox 3.0 on my notebook for a while. I thought about switching to Chrome on my desktop, but it's the PC I use for most of my chestnut selling records and I am a tiny bit afraid of trying something new since it's my really busy season.

Thanks,

Harvey

In another forum there were 2 folks who went to chrome One found it no better than firefox, and the other thought it faster. They did say to take off adblock however..

If you are looking for an alternative to IE7 or Firefox, try Opera. Its loaded with features. Opera invented tabbed browsing along with may other features copied by other browsers.

I've used Chrome and its nothing special. Dillo (not availabe on Windows) is the fastest browser I've ever used.

I've been using Chrome on a Windows platform since the day it was announced. I stopped using other browsers about a week later. The user interface is good but what it really excels at is controlling applications and memory use by programs running in a browser window. It has never "crashed" or "hung" my computer. I have had some web pages freeze, but I just killed that particular tab. Internet Explorer users will find it quick, but then again Internet Explorer is very slow. Chrome is still in Beta release mode, so some common features like intelligent page scaling during printing are missing.

Why should you use Chrome, or IE, or Firefox, or the internet in general? No idea. My advice to people about the material world is:
If you don't need a blender, don't buy one.

Pauly, don't you get dehyrated by not drining???

I like Firefox much better than MSIE for several reasons. Faster, saves tabs if I cra h or just shut down, spell checks what I've typed, saves what I've typed by pressing the "back" button (very helpful when bananas.org had server troubles), etc. One thing that is really nice - if I shut down and later restart Firefox and reopen the tabs, it saves my hiistory and I can revisit prior pages by pressing the "back" button. This is usually much easier/faster than searching my history.

I have been using Chrome since it was publicly available, its great.
They have a webcomic explaining why its a good browser, worth reading:
Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/)

This is off the subject of the topic, but I've had a lot of spam also. My main e-mail is from my own domain and what I've done that works very well is forward all of my domain mail to my gmail address and then I have Outlook just downloads the e-mails that gmail hasn't filtered out. Gmail does a great job filtering spam. I used to get over 100 per day but it dropped this past spring suddenly for some unknown reason. No gmail filters out about 50 a day and only about 5 a week slip through and maybe 2 per month get identified improperly as spam. My outgoing mail settings show my domain address as the reply address so it's transparent to other people that I'm even using gmail. The only thing is that I can't set my cell phone to retrieve gmail and show my domain address, but that's not a biggie for me. I just go ahead and reply from gmail if it's urgent.

... having had the same e-mail for 11 years i get alot of spame some times its like over 200 a day ...

I currently have 9 email addresses: one is 35 years old, the next oldest is 20 years old, the remainder are from the last 15 years. I receive about a dozen spam messages per day and have no spam blocker -- I just use the delete key. I also have not installed "free" software like "desktop weather" and "3D smilies" that broadcast your email and personal information to spam providers.

I don't install any of those smiles, etc. either, but too many other folks have posted my e-mail address on grower directories, etc. and the bots have a field day there! I think the real culprit is when a business I had done work with got attacked and their address book apparently was copied. A friend of mine that also had a contact with them suddenly had a huge surge in spam the same time I did. At one time I also was foolish in the way I had my e-mail adress on my web site. I believe the code I now use is more secure.

Richard, I knew you must be really old when you were commenting in another thread about something that happened in the early 19th century. Gosh, I've only had an e-mail address for 18 years! And I don't use that CompuServe address at this time. Thanks for making me feel young. :)

I don't know about Chrome, but I use Safari and I lurve it. It's bleeding fast even on graphics-heavy sites like the BBC, and it's so easy to use it's almost intuitive.

Then again, I've never been a big fan of PCs... Still got one, though; I use it for AutoCAD because Autodesk hates fun.

I've got an iMac but I'm much faster working on a PC. I've looked at Mac shortcuts but they still don't get me around as fast as I can do with keyboard strokes on my PC. For instance, when I am processing orders I am constantly switching from 3 to 4 applications, copying and pasting information, etc. and it just would take me much longer to do on a Mac. In addition, my customer data is stored in an Access file and that's not available for a Mac. I have no desire to run Windows on a Mac either. Safari seemed fine for a browser, but I still prefer the features I have with Firefox and am anxious to check out Chrome.

Jarred, you didn't mention details of your experience - have you run across any problems in using it?

...Jarred, you didn't mention details of your experience - have you run across any problems in using it?

I use an array of bookmarklets in my personal toolbar folder in Firefox that do not work in Chrome. So for me, and what I do, its not the best as it does not allow me to get my work done. On that note, though, I also use Opera for certain tasks that I cannot do in Firefox. So it really all depends on what your using it for and what your needs are.
Another thing that I don't like about Chrome is that the status bar does not display as many characters that I would like, for example, if you place your cursor over a link and want to see the full URL before clicking it, the Chrome status bar will likely truncate the tail end of the link, where much of the important info will likely reside. There are many things that I do like about it. For example, one feature that I really enjoy are the independent processes each tab instance brings, so as to not crash all your tabs and windows when merely one goes haywire.
