I tried searching the forum but I didn't find anything that described the varieties of bananas that will successfully grow (and hopefully fruit) in the San Diego area (zone 9-10) so here goes......
I am looking for a banana species that will have the following characteristics:
- thrive in zone 9 - 10
- very sandy soil
- mostly full sun
- nice visual barrier (8 feet and taller)
- some wind tolerance
- tasty fruit!
Thanks in advance!!

If you didn't put there that "tasty" phrase, I would know... Try some big Cavendish, but I'm afraid it will be too low for you.

There are all kinds of bananas growing around you in San Diego. Check out the member map and see, then click on their names and see the varieties in their profiles. Pitangdiego also has a huge selection for purchase. You can find him here or on his website for Encanto Farms. Several other members grow/sell banana plants in the San Diego area.
Good luck!

Are you sure they like VERY SANDY SOIL? For a very sandy soil I would consider desert or subdesert, e?

My Apple is currently growing in White sand, and have seen Ice Cream, and Williams growing on the beach, just have to water well. I would reccomend starting a compost to help get your soil nice a rich. If your soil has a hard time holding water there is a product called Aqua Rocks. Very awesome product mix a Table spoon into sandy soil and water until the rocks become full of water and they will release the water as the soil soaks it out of the Aqua Rocks. Seems to be helping my Apple that is in White Sand. I also use lots of Boost during season!

It depends very much on exactly where you are in San Diego. I grow about 100 varieties near College Grove. You are welcome to come and see.
