View Full Version : Some didn't get the memo

Now that Jarred was nice enough to get us a brand new server, let's all try to keep it running as fast a s possible by posting photos in the member gallery - NOT IN THE THREAD!!! Each photo file eats up time to load on the page, and everyone posting a quoted reply duplicates that. When you make a post, and attempt to link a photo, there is even a notice not to post photos in the thread.
Now everyone "Got the Memo" so there should be no more excuses.
Thanks!

If that helps so much - I vote "yes" even though I love seeing pictures in posts.

So Scot...
then what does this mean?

Scot,
I appreciate your concern with the speed of the server, but I do not load that many pics in my photo gallery because I simply do not wish to take the time to store some pics that I will not keep. I know for me when I am reading a post, if I have to stop and go to the members photo gallery, most of the time, I will not. If we are going to stop posting pics in threads, then I for one will abide, but I will not be posting near as much as I have in the past for that very reason... Just my 2 pennies worth. I truly do appreciate everything Jarred does and has done. Hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings by posting this, but I feel I have a right to my opinion whether I am right or not....

How do we link our posts to the pictures we download in our gallery? I've never been able to figure that one out. If there was a way to "branch" over and see the pictures, then everyone would be happy. Is there a way that you can make some kind of a link in your post that goes to your gallery picture?

Great point Sandy, A quick way to link to pic is as good as the pic in the post.

Scot, this thread is confusing with the title used for the subject? Was there a "memo" Jarred sent out? If Jarred doesn't want us to post photos in the thread, why does the gallery have the code specifically designed to let us post the photos in our thread? I personally like to see the photos within the thread, especially when there are comments made along with each photo.
What I really don't like is when someone ends up quoting a prior message which contains the photos, sometimes resulting in the very same photos showing up 2, 3, or more times in the same thread. That is really eating up bandwidth for no useful purpose, IMO.

I Agree with Harvey on that perspective, there really isn't a reason for the same pics showing up in the same thread over and over and over again, I like seeing the pic with the comments, but to resee-read it over and again with every response gets a bit tedious and does use a ton of ban width.

I like pics in the posts, lets just try not to quote them.

Not to harp on this Scot, but I was just thinking that your suggestion (request?) would be like me reading an article in a magazine but having to go to some appendix to see the photos they were talking about. Not very user friendly!
The problems at IBS don't seem to be related to the photos in posts because the new server seems to have solved the issues completely. Jarred has disabled some features he previously had which he thought were resource hogs, but these were more along the lines of things that were dynamic (i.e., reporting who was doing what, etc.). If Jarred thought the photos in posts were a problem, wouldn't he say something about it? In the meantime, I'd rather worry about how I can expand my collection of Ae Ae bananas. ;)
Cheers,
Harvey

I'm not very familiar with how IPB handles images, but typically when you call to an image it shouldn't put THAT much strain on the server. It's much more processor intensive to submit a post than query an image. Or at least it is on the bulletin board systems I've used. Images are handled by a viewers browser once it's been queried - removing much of the "load." Having gone through a number of serve moves myself over the years, typically the gallery has been the least of my worries - baring anyone at myspace isn't stealing half my images and using my bandwidth by linking to them directly in their profiles, LOL.
Still, I'd like to know the proper way to link to photos if we're not supposed to include them in our posts. Maybe a demo would help those of us who aren't quite sure what to do.
And maybe disabling the image tag within the QUOTE tag would be a solution too?

Scot, I never did get the memo. Where is it? This is the only notice I see about photos, and it only involves attachments, not the user gallery:
Attach Files
Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg mp3 pdf png ppt psd txt zip
NOTE - If you are attaching images, please upload them to your gallery instead of using this attachment feature. This should only be used to attach files other than images!
This is the link to upload photos (link opens in a new window).
I'd like to hear from Jarred himself. If that's what he wants, then I'll try to abide by it, but I can't imagine that he is endorsing this thread!

I love seeing pictures in threads!
One of the reasons we moved to a new dedicated server was so we can handle the load that all the pictures and posts and searching and other intense activity brings.
There's other things you guys can do to speed the site up, from your end. For example, you can upgrade the antennas on your wireless router if you are accessing the site in that manner. You can also get a range extender for your router. Or you can get faster internet service from your ISP.
I have made several posts about how to post pics in threads, and I also made a video on how to do it.
Posting Pictures Tutorial - AquariumForum.com (http://www.aquariumforum.com/posting-pictures.php) <- video
And here's a coupe posts showing how:
Bananas.org - View Single Post - Variegated Dwarf 'namwah Pearl' (http://www.bananas.org/showpost.php?p=390&postcount=17)
http://www.bananas.org/f5/how-post-images-your-threads-97.html
I have even walked a number of people through the process over the telephone because I really want everyone to know how to post pictures and not find it confusing.
I know Scot means well but I think the new server should handle the load, and when it cannot keep up anymore, eventually we'll get additional servers. My opinion is let us get a feel for the new server before we put rules in place regarding playing nice with it. Cheers!

Hmmm....I hadn't thought about wireless router antenna being an issue, but I suppose I'm okay since my signal strength always shows as "excellent". I'd love something even faster than my DSL, but I've very lucky to have even that my my rural area. I've heard most satellite services are too much of a hassle and/or to unreliable, besides being way too much $$$$. The site is nice and fast on both my desktop PC (wired connection) and my notebook (wireless). Thanks, Jarred!

Yes, this is what my post relates to. I was trying to bring it to the forefront. But if this is how everyone feels about it, then post away. At this point I couldn't care less.

If thats what your post related to, sorry for the confusion. What was happening was people were using the attachment function to attach pics to their posts. Instead, we want people to use the gallery to upload pics to the site, then use the bulletin board (BB) code to paste the pics in their threads.
I can see how that could come off as confusing!
The reason why we want people to use the gallery to upload their pics, and not the "attachment" tool is because when you use the attachment tool, your pics are hard to find in the future, they dont go into any special gallery nor become searchable, nor can you add keywords and descriptions, have discussions about the pics, etc. like you would get all these benefits and more if you place the pics in the gallery instead.
For example:
http://www.bananas.org/f2/whats-wrong-5129.html
^ The above link is Mark's thread about his Lasiocarpa woes from a couple months ago.
Lets say I read that thread a couple months ago, and today want to have another look at the pics. I visit the photo gallery, do an advanced search (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/search.php) for Mark Hall in the username field AND "Lasiocarpa" in the keyword field, I would NOT find those pics (recreate that exact search (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showgallery.php?mcats=500&si=lasiocarpa&what=allfields&name=Mark%20Hall&when=0&whenterm=&condition=and)). Had he uploaded them to the gallery and pasted them in the thread in this manner as we now encourage, I would have been able to find those pics.
So it makes finding pics easier, among many more reasons we can go into as well by using the gallery for the uploads, instead of the 'true' thread attachments.
An example of a good attachment would be a PDF of banana research, for example, because you cannot upload this type of file to the photo gallery.
That's why we offer the two modules as two different places to upload files.
Sorry for the confusion Scot, I know you meant well though!

Okay, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I like browsing through some galleries, especially our one member that has an extensive collection of variegated bananas that I like to drool over! :)
