I spent some time cutting out 4 pups today from my Ice Creams and ran into a real issue.

2 of them had no roots! Both of them had about 2 inches of heel to the mother corm but had developed no roots of their own.

The plants are about 18 inches tall and an inch and a half in diameter on the pstem.

Any experience? I do not expect these 2 to survive and I have 2 others with what look like normal roots.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Same thing happened when I separated a pup from my Calif. Gold . But I planted it anyway without roots.
I'll wait and see.
So far there was a growth of 2 inches but I figured it was just the auto growth from the corm nutrients.
It's going to be a while before new root growth takes place.
Just keep it on the dry side.

That's been my experience, too, but when I've planted the pups (and when neighbors have planted the pups) they've done just fine.

I always pop those in water (I've gotten liked half a corm before with little to no p-stem) and it still grows. Once they have some roots and signs of life sitting in water, I transplant to normal soil. Works every time.

Same thing happend on my icecream pup, it did not survive. My other bananas always had roots at that size. I am going to try some of the other pups soon just thought I would let them get a little bigger. I will try the water idea next time.

Ya I've done that on my AF Rhino twice and there takeing off. They had no roots at all. I've all so read that in the right conditions you can cut the pup into pieces like a potato and grow into a new plant. This is a simple link but I learned a lot from this guy.

Here's a few in water right now - all were damaged or dug up by accident in the process of removing larger pups. I'll give them a few days or a week or two in water before transplanting. Below is a very small piece I potted up about a month ago - it's well on its way for next year. Sometimes you get water suckers and other times sword suckers - it can be hard to tell at this size IMHO.
