Does anyone know of, or had success in taking root cuttings from any banana genus? I'm thinking it should be possible, possibly more so for musas, but particularly useful for ensetes? Some advice would be good.

do you mean can you divide the bulbs? if thats the question yes you can Ensetes do really well by devisions its the only way to get new plants if you don't have seeds!

I don't think root cuttings will work, but if you mean splitting corms, that works. I split one bordelon in half and got 2 starts on one half that came up but only one on the other side. Now who knows? really maybe if I'd waited a little longer it would have had 3 pups anyway.

Haven't I seen a diagram on here where they took small slices of corm with root for propogation? I've been unable to locate the exact post :(

Haven't I seen a diagram on here where they took small slices of corm with root for propogation? I've been unable to locate the exact post :(the diagram you are referring to is on how to separate a pup for its mother bulb but its kinda the same principal Ensete have many eyes on the top of the bulb just cut down and make sure that theres alt least one eye on each section that you intend to use a mature bulb can have as many as 120 eye but i wouldn't sub divide that many i say when dividing and this is a good rool of thumb for any thing you mite do quarters are the best ratio or maybe 6 parts if its a big corm you have to leave some of the corm and some roots on each piece

Not the separation diagram, there was another where they had pics of small pieces of corm/root. I'll experiment first pup I get from the ones I just put in the ground. I'm not putting the big plant through anymore trauma so no more pup separation :)

Relatively few plants can be propagated by root cuttings, bananas are not one of them. It's difficult to find good info on plants that can be though, because many people cannot distinguish between true roots and other plant parts. In the case of bananas, the corm is not a root, it is a stem, so if you mean propagation by the corms, then follow the advice above, but if you mean propagation by roots, then that is not possible.

Yes, I have seen that photo too. I think it was in a publication from INIBAP, but can't recall. Sorry. The photo shows a whole corm and next to it are several pieces of a cut-up corm - looking much like a seed potato is cut.

Next year when I get pups on the new plants I'll try it out on one of them. From what I read you get a good chance as long as there is corm AND root.
