We are in Choctaw, Oklahoma and just started researching bananas. My brother in law (Dallas, TX) put a couple plants around his pool and I thought it would be great to grow them here. I have come across the musa orinoco and the musa basjoo that would seem to do well here without having to overwinter indoors. Anyone around these parts grow those two species? The orinoco seems good because of the edible fruit.
I have been looking at garden stores/nurseries for hardy type plants, but so far can only find ones that would require being brought indoors when it gets cold. Any suggestions on where to purchase?
Thanks again and I hope to learn bunches from this site (sorry couldn't help myself):woohoonaner:

HEHE!! There is a Bunch of info to be found here.. along with wonderful people always willing to lend a hand..Orinoco is hardy in your zone but will have to be held dormant and replanted to get fruit.. I spent 10yrs working in Norman and grew up in the City.. WELCOME!!! I look forward to seeing you around..

I wish I could help. I guest you can grow anything as long as you are willing to work. Some members go through a lot for the love of growing nanas. Welcome.

Glad to have you with us. Bring your brother in law too. There are quite a few that should work for you, as you explore the threads for cold-hardy bananas.

Hi there! I didn't see your USDA zone listed in your profile, so I looked up some weather data for Choctaw:

It looks like you are in zone 9a ! There are some tasty edible bananas you can grow there along with some beautiful ornamentals. You'll be reading and hearing about these from other members with your climate.

When I looked up on the USDA map, it said I was zone 7a. What site did you look at that said zone 9a, because that would open up a whole lot of plants for us.

Choctaw, OK is definitely in Zone 7. It gets mighty cold in central Oklahoma.

Thanks. After poking around this site, I think I may like to start off with the Musa Orinoco. Is there much difference between the dwarf & full size? Where is the best place to get a plant?
