Hey all,
I have been doing some reading about bananas, and have run across MANY words I had to stop and look up. (IE, imbricate, lamina, tepal, and the list could go on and on for me!) Point is, would a glossary of sorts with a link to it not be a good idea for this site. I mean, even some what we consider simple words, hands, fingers, pseudostem, for a beginner may be a little daunting. I personally would like to see a linkable section on here that would list words and their definitions to be able to access easily. Not sure if this would be something someone would want to undertake during the winter months, but I know if alot of folks are interested, and someone could help me figure out the best way to set it up, I would do my best to get something to help. It would also give me more knowledge to the meaning of this words and hopefully help all of us understand each other much better. Please let me know what you folks think...
Randy

Just this weekend, for some reason I wished for the same thing. There is a good Botanical terminology website with definitions for all of these terms. When I get home, I will post a link to it. It really was helpful. Perhaps a link to it in our Wiki might make sense?

Attached is a glossary from Bioversity International, it has mostly technical terms but could be useful. Whats very useful for plant morphology in particular is the Bioversity International "Descriptors for Banana". This is the document used to guide a scientist in describing as fully as possible any banana plant, whether wild or edible, and has many different terms and diagrams. The document can be found here: Banana Bioversity International -- - Descriptors for Banana (http://bananas.bioversityinternational.org/content/view/26/53/lang,en/)

It's a great idea and I think the wiki would be a great place for it, this way people can expand on the definitions and enhance them over time.

This is a fantastic idea. Being somewhat new to banana's, this would help me greatly. Red

Just came across a website that has linked botanical terms used in describing bananas and other plants. When you move your cursor over a term, it brings up a text sensitive box defining the word. If we could do something like this on our Wiki site, it would be quite useful. (It even pronounces some of the words) Check it out and you will see what I mean:
Musa acuminata 'Enano Gigante' (Dwarf Giant Banana) (http://zipcodezoo.com/Plants/M/Musa_acuminata_Enano_Gigante/Default.asp)

Absolutely great idea! I'm a horticulturist and I can't even remember what all those words mean. When you're not involved in plant breeding or not a scientist, some of those words rarely get used or even thought of, so they just go right out of your head. It would definitely be nice to have a handy place to go and look these terms up when I need them. This site gets better all the time!
