i put my banana tree in a self watering container. but i forgot to water it for about three days and the roots grew like crazy in search of water and theyfound a a way to get into the "water chamber" out of the soil. im going to plant it into a bigger pot but thoughs roots might make it difficult. is it ok if i just snip the ends of the roots off?

If it's got enough roots that they are growing out of the bottom of the pot, then it won't miss a few. Go ahead and snip away!

Berserker,
It will be fine. No different than if you were digging it up out of your landscape to transplant it somewhere else. Sometimes, when they've become potbound like this, cutting the roots a bit is actually stimulating for them. They'll just put out more.

kylie get a goat, armored tanks dont like them. lol. and as for snipping the roots its just like getting a hair cut, it stimulates the plant and they will grow back. just dont snip off too much. its called root pruning.

so now that trimming roots has come up, let me get this straight. when you dig up a nanner tree do you cut all of the roots or just enough to fit the pot your putting it in?

I assume you mean a pup when you mention digging one up, but either way, pup or the entire plant you don't want to remove all the roots. If say digging up an 8' plant that you intend to pot up, you're inevitably going to lose a lot of roots. Just keep as many as possible and then be careful how much you water it for a few weeks and it should recover.

when i dig one up to move or send it off somewhere, i only trim maybe 1/4 inch off some of the longer roots. root pruning is done to all types of trees and different types of plants.
