Has Any One Tried Growing A Pineapple That Was Store Bought? I Have Not Had Any Luck At It! I Have Seen It In A Number Of Upscale Hotels Though!

There are several threads her about growing Pineapple tops. Do a search using the button towards the top right of the page. Oh and yes it's easy to grow them.

I bought one in the store, cut off the top and left about 1-2inches under the foliage. stuck in the dirt and in 1 yr it popped out a pineapple. it sat on the dining room table from nov -march with little water or attention. was outside in direct sun for 8+ hours a day during the day when the temps were above 50 at night. with a little water every now and then. did not do anything special for it though. good luck

I started one about 3 weeks ago and it looks pretty similar to the pictures in your gallery, Robb.

After pulling the top off the pineapple, I took a few slices off the bottom until I could see some root buds. Peeled a couple of inches of foliage off and stuck the top in a cup of water. Changed the water every couple of days. Took about 3 weeks for the roots to form.

I decided to pot it up this afternoon. There was some jelly-like smeg forming (rot?) so I wiped that off and stuck it in a pot with half perlite and half sphagnum peat moss. It's sitting outside in indirect sunlight. We'll see how she goes.

I followed the advice from many of the other threads on this subject (search titles only for pineapple (http://www.bananas.org/search.php?searchid=126457)). The store pineapples here in San Diego are not quite ripe, so I cut the foliage along with a portion of the core out of the top, then peeled off several layers of leaves and scraped fruit pulp off of the 2-inch section of core. This I dipped in some rooting gel which contains both growth nutrients and fungal inhibitors. I then plant directly in soil.

2 months ago i started a pineapple. i didnt do the water thing( like i did before) i peeled the greenaga back to 1 inch and had roots already on it. so i just stuck it in some banana dirt and i now have a pineapple plant. when i started the pineapple it was in the shade outside. it is now inside the house.

They will grow for quite a long time in a glass of water with a pinch of fertilizer in the windowsill. I've got one in the window now that I started this spring, and another one I started a few weeks ago.
I had one growing in a betta vase instead of a peace lily for about a year! Then I got feeling sorry for it and potted it up. We get at least one pineapple a year from my small pineapple collection, but they're usually small.

My local Ag rep. tells me these water-soluble fertilizers are popular with the Mexican pineapple growers:
Grow More 16-8-26
Scotts 15-5-15

pineapples love hot, full sun, tropical environments. start plants directly in soil, then once growth is noticed, start applying balanced water soluble ferts ( miracle grow, etc....) monthly, pour over the top of plant and also on the soil. pineapples are sensitive to salt build up in the soil, so don't over do the monthly ferts, esp. if growing them in pots. the idea is to get the plant growing as large and vigorous as possible before it sets fruit, the larger and healthier the plant, the bigger and better the fruit will be. there is no need to start them in water to root, it only encourages rot!

Would you do the monthly ferts even in the winter with the pineapple in the house?

Use a winterizer, such as 10-20-30 in October, and maybe in November if there is plenty of light + warmth in the indoor location. Skip Dec. and Jan., then start monthly with a 1:__:1.5 formula, such as 20-5-30.

Thank you for the advice, Richard. Is it easy to find a premixed 10-20-30 or a 20-5-30 fert?

Just this last week I received promotional coupons from both Home Depot and Lowes for winterizing fertilizers. The proportions of N-P-K were not 10-20-30, but seemed about right; i.e., low-medium-high. The 20-5-30 formula (and similar, like 16-5-24) are available in water-soluble products by Grow More, Scotts, etc. found at agricultural supply stores and independent nurseries. A few of the vendors who advertise on this site also carry it, including myself at the URL below. :)

Pauly, don't give up on it yet. Sometimes they look almost dead before they start growing from the center. Just give them time to develope some roots. A coupe of years ago, i thought the top had rotted on one i had planted. I was busy with spring planting at the time and didn't throw it out. Later i saw 2 pups coming up from the bottom of the plant.

I planted some store bought pineapple tops they gave them to me as they were coreing out the pineapple. They are about one year old. 2 are pot bownd 4 are in the ground the ones in the ground are larger. I've heard it can take up to 30 months to a FIRST FRUIT. But they say it well worth the wait. I've had home grown pineapple in Trinidad and I can't eat a store bought pineapple.
