View Full Version : Hi
Joined a little while ago, finally posting. Have already learned a bunch just from reading around.
I live in Boca Raton, FL and am currently growing Ice Cream, Rajapuri, and a Dwarf Red.
Non-bananas are a Brewster Lychee, Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, Blueberries (fingers crossed), and several different vegetables.

Nice to have you with us. I used to live in Boca a million years ago. Late 70's. It's changed so much. Everything west of Military trail was everglades then. Now its shopping malls, banks, golf courses and residential that goes on for miles - things sure have changed. Federal Hwy was the center of town and so clean and nice. Worked at the top of the tower at the Boca Raton Hotel and Club.

Welcome, Tom! You sure are in a very nice area, very conducive to banana culture. A little north of you, in Boynton Beach, are Jarred (Mediahound) - Administrator of Bananas.org, and JeffreyP. Both are great sources of banana varieties.

In '04, I stayed a month at the Renaissance Hotel on Glades Rd. during the onslaught of Hurricane Frances, after being forced to evacuate there just before it hit, from the Embassy Suites in Deerfield Beach. We were forced to evacuate there because the Embassy Stes. was right on the beach. Inspite of being on the west side of the Hwy 95, our area lost power for over a day and a half after Frances went through. Because there was no power, we thought we were going to take the days off, but no such luck, FEMA wanted us to go around the County and do preliminary damage assessments. Well gee, life is hard, I guess.
Even after moving to the Marriott in Del Ray Beach, my wife and I were prone to coming back to that Original Steakhouse on Glades Road near the Turnpike entrance. Except for the noise(it's a sports bar), that place was terrific!

Small World. My office is about 2 blocks from the hotel. Office had no electricity for a week (Yeah!). My house is about 4 miles south of there. No electricity for 10 days and we were in the middle of a heat wave to boot. I was actually happy to go back to work for the A/C.

Think that place is going out of business...again. That building has been a revolving door for some reason. You'd think with the access right off the Turnpike they'd make a killing.

Small world, indeed! I think the reason I said we had no power for only a day and half was that the hotel had a generator, but it took more than a day to get it going due to a malfunction. In fact, it may have been that the area didn't have power for a week. Your office must have been near the shopping mall, huh? During those 2 days without electricity, the hotel restaurant only served the guests at the hotel. Naturally, some of the FEMA people went there as guests of the FEMA residents at the hotel, because in spite of the situation, they actually served better food than what was available elsewhere.

That's tragic. The food was great and the price was reasonable. Very easy access. Maybe they're not charging enough. LOL. Ke'e Grill on Military Road is terrific, too. But very spendy! Can't go wrong with grilled Chilean Sea Bass here - favorite of my wife and I. Hope they're doing OK. It would be nice to go there the next time we visit the area. A little further north in Palm Beach, a landmark restaurant on Ocean Blvd., I believe just 1/4 mile south of Rush Limbaugh's "small house", called Charley's Crab. Probably, formerly the smallest house in the immediate area, so it was converted into a restaurant. I've been going there since 1998, whenever I would do inspections on Costco stores in the area. A once a month dinner there during my nine month stint for the 4 hurricane recovery efforts was sure a nice reprise.
