Well, my Texas Star hibiscus plants, (Hibiscus coccineus) are really putting out the seeds now. I have harvested some of both my red and white ones. I had two plants that I overwintered in pots in my garage from last fall and planted out this spring. I also had great success growing them from seeds that I started in Jan./Feb. The seeds I started this year grew into plants that are blooming their heads off right now. Before I go to the trouble of gathering more seeds, I wanted to see if anyone is interested in trying these GREAT looking plants for themselves. If anyone is interested in starting them from seed, send me a pm. If not, I am not going to go to the trouble of gathering anymore seeds.

I may have a couple of small potted plants that I would part with if someone wanted to pay shipping on them. Otherwise, I only have seeds...
Just thought I would offer these to my friends on Bananas.org!!!

Randy I didnt know what this plant was till I saw this post!!
My neighbor gave it to me a couple of months ago. Either I forgot what she said it was , or she didnt know either! :ha:
It started making pods and I thought "well this will be interesting"!
At least now people will stop thinking its a weed plant! Yea right! Like I would grow that right out in full view!!:ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:
I'll shoot you a pm for the white seeds should you have anymore. Thanks
Here's a couple pictures of mine. It just bloomed this morning......................

They are beautiful but no way I could grow them unless I had the police over for a BBQ on a regular basis so they could check me out. We have such a bad marijuana problem out here. Even some farmers are growing it as they can't make ends meet farming. Planes fly over and one time we had a helicoptor make a nose dive in the field next to us. Boy was that loud. Shoot... I'm probably suspicious enough with my plant room glowing in the evenings with grow lights in the winter. :ha:

cookie it dosent look like pot to me....and im sure if the law stopped by they could tell it wasnt either.( well as long as you dont get a rookie cop anyways.....)that way you could give them a tour of your beautiful yard and give them a guided tour. you can explaine all the wonders of growing tropical plants in kentucky. lol!

Hi there,
I just found this website while looking for info on Texas Star hibiscus. I have the red type and would very much like to have seeds from the white Texas Star hibiscus. Do you have any left? If so, what do I need to do next?

Randy, I'm about to get a bloom on my Red Star that I got as a small seedling last year. The white ones I grew from seed are growing up now too. I will be pushing them for a bloom later this summer. Can't wait! Thanks again, my friend.

Glad to hear it, Austing. Both the white and red were some of the first plants up this spring for me and all of them are at least 6' and actually taller than alot of my bananas that got such a late start this spring. My reds are blooming now and have been for about a week now, and I think the whites are not too far behind.
For the folks that are wanting seeds and have pm'd me in the past, I will be sure to post when I start having seeds to share. Some of you I could not answer back due to the security you have placed on your account and it says you are not willing to let anyone pm you. If you pm me, be sure that I can reply or there will not be any way for me to contact you.
Thanks....
Austin,
keep me updated on their progress...

Does anyone still have the white seeds of texas star? I have the red texas star. The wind blew and broke some of the branches. So I don't know if it will bloom this year or not.

Hey Vickie,
Unfortuantely, last year's seeds are gone, but mine , both red and white, have come back stronger than ever after one of my worst winters in the past 5 years. The red one has been blooming for about a week and a half now, and today, the white one gave me its first bloom of the season. Contact me in a couple of weeks and hopefully, I will start having some seeds to send folks that want to try them...

Hey Mark,
I should have plenty here shortly. Both types were some of the first plants up this spring and have done very well for me. As I stated in previous post, white one is just starting to bloom, so it will be several weeks before they seed. I will let you know and send some your way. Good to hear from you...

I've been using M.Gro Bloom Booster liquid fertilizer on my red Texas Star every 7 to 14 days and got a bumper crop of flowers this summer. Mine are in LARGE containers. About 25 lbs M.Gro potting soil to each pot. I water every morning as Texas Star is a "bog" shrub. I love these shrubs!!!

Okay, my red texas star hibiscus seeds are starting to be ready to ship. I know several of you are wanting the white texas star, but not sure if anyone is wanted the red. If no one wants the red, that is fine, I just don't want to waste my time with harvesting the red seeds, if no one wants any. The whites should be ready several weeks later and I will post here when they are ready. But for now, if anyone is wanting the red texas star hibiscus, pm me and give me your address and I will get back with you. Thanks!!!

Hey, Randy, how long does it take for the seed pod to ripen? I know Daylillies takes close to three months. My first bllom was on 8/1 and it formed a pod on 8/2 it is now getting pretty large.
I too will have plenty seed of the red and white if anyone else run out.
Thanks,
Jake

We grew a whole bunch of red star hobiscus which are now about five incheds tall. We are here near nashville TN. We first saw these as historical plants at the palace in New Bern TN. We are interested in 1800's correct plants. Do you still have white seeds to share? Do you have any tips for us. We thought about lining our drive with these plants... Do you think they would work alternated with pink or white dogwood?

I would love to get some seeds, especially the red. I've been looking for these seeds. I'm guessing my resident hummingbirds would love them, and presume they will do fine in sunny CA. I'm new here, but have recently started trading seeds on another site. Please let me know if you want postage. Thank you so much for your kind offer!

I have noticed the Hummer's loving this plant here in Florida. I would think they woul do fine in California, just be sure no to let them dry. They will let you kow when they are thirsty by thier leaves limping.

Finally have both red and white Texas Star seeds ready for shipping!!! I am in the process of compiling a list of folks that are wanting, and what they want (red, white, or both). I will be going to get the mailers within a couple of days and start shipping. All that I ask is that you pm me, or email me, with Texas Star seeds in the subject line. I cannot ship to you if you don't give me your mailing address!!! So, comment all you want to this thread, but if you are wanting to get some seeds, don't say so here, PM OR EMAIL me!!!!
I will let everyone know, that sends me their address and what they are wanting, when I ship via pm or email...
There were a couple of folks that contacted me awhile back with addresses and I have misplaced them, and I truly apologize. Please pm or email me again and I promise not to misplace them this time as I am ready to ship and don't have to keep up with it for very long...
Let me hear from all who are interested!!! THANKS!!!!

I'm thrilled to get the seeds today, especially the white ones, and can't wait untill next year to plant them. It's not a common flower here in Georgia, not that I can see at least. Many thanks to you, Randy!
:woohoonaner:
The seeds I received form you last year produced some wonderful plants this year. Thanks again.
In my experience the white ones did not seem to have as high of a germination rate, maybe 30% compared with 80% of red. thought I would put that out there for the folks receiveing seeds this year, plant a few extra white ones.
Maybe just me though.

Thanks for letting people, trying to grow the white hibiscus, know. I have to find out for myself next year. What I noticed is that soaking the seeds in warm water for a day and then planting them speeds up the germination process. Thanks again for the warning.

Just wish to share this with people who don't have a fence and are trying to grow Texas Star hibiscus that deer will eat this plant. So be aware of the deer problem when you grow them.

I believe they may be able to cross pollinate with the tropical Hibiscus. I read that they cross pollinated already to create another Hibiscus type. About the time I decided I would try this they were done blooming for this year. I guess I will try next year.
