My brand new area, so far I have 10 different varieties planted (Safet Velchi, Yangambi KM5, Maoli 'ele'ele, Maoli maoli, Pama, Pisang Jari Buaya, Rose, Hapai, Pisang Berlin and Tango. Planing to add Senorita and Obino l'Ewai soon). I am also going to be planting many other non-banana crops in and around the area.

Beautiful. I loved the way you boxed it all in. It looks nice. I'd love to be sitting on the bench about now. What sort of musa is Obino l'Ewai? Is it a dessert or a plantain?

Cool photos. I was thinking about doing some raised beds like that next year. How deep did you cultivate below ground level before you built the boxes? Or I guess another way of putting it is how deep does the total growing space need to be when using raised beds? I was going to shoot for like 2 feet (maybe a foot below ground level and a foot above)....This seems kind of like what you've in your pictures. Nice work.

Edit: I found the info I was looking for in another post. Still, if you have any info about you raised beds that relates to my question above I'd be interested.

It is a type of French Plantain from Nigeria.

I didn't make the boxes, they are just there as part of the student garden areas (which no one else uses) so I don't know how they went about prepping them. The soil around here is usually pretty good though, so I'm sure the roots of my plants go into the ground soil below the boxes. In the large open area though, I could only easily dig down about 1-2ft before hitting harder stuff, I don't think it will be a problem for the bananas but I dug big holes for each one and amended the areas with composted manure and straight compost.
