I'm going to visit Jon tomorrow at Encanto farms and buy bananas!!!

What should I get? I know, I know...one of EVERYTHING! :)

Richard has suggested...
Dwarf Brazilian
Dwarf Namwa
Sweetheart

They all sound great. I'm on the coast so I'm pretty mild here with temps. I do want a fruiting banana and I don't want a HUGE one. It's going to be so hard to pick just one...or two. :)

I really like my Dwarf Brazillian, I heard they have tasty bananas. They all sound great imo. I'd have a hard time just buying one or two myself. :)

My favorite looking plant right now is my FHIA 18 that I got from him.

Leave some for me. I am making a trip to San Diego in a few weeks for the same reason. Hope he's open on Saturdays....

I don't know if you want something shorter or not, but the SH-3640 I got from Jon is growing great and he's made favorable comments about the fruit quality. I think you should consider getting some figs from him also.

Although I live 400 miles or so away, I've been to Jon's three times in the past nine months, including the one time I sneaked by to show my wife and son in hopes they would quit making fun of me. I talked my son into doing his 4th grade mission report on the mission there so I could visit more San Diego nurseries! :)

You're still coming garden raiding during the Festival of Fruit next month, right?

When is the Festival of Fruit and where is it being held? Perhaps I will visit San Diego at the same time.

I have never visited Encanto farms. I have e-mailed Jon several times and he responds quickly and knows his bananas. I am planning a trip in October to SD and will make a visit to his nursery. He said he will be at the festival of fruit this year. I am planning to go and hopefully will pick up some varieties I don't already have. It is very temperate here in Santa Barbara which allows me to try many varieties. I know you will get some great plants!

The mission is in San Juan Capistrano and that is where the nursery is I got my jamaican red at. Plant Depot in San Juan, it's a pretty nursery with a great pond. I'm just a few exits away in San Clemente.

Harvey I'm so glad your family makes fun of you too. :)

While you're in the area, Richard, you can find out where the owner of JD Anderson lives and raid his Ae Ae collection! ;)

Okay your freaking me out! Crazy banana people. :)

I had a great time at Jon's and he was so knowledgable. I learned so much and enjoyed looking at all the beautiful plants. It was GREAT. I wanted to take thema all home. I got a gorgeous dwarf namwah. I'm very excited about it and it looks so healthy and loved. I will plant it tomorrow and take some pictures. Thanks Jon!!

D Namwah is an excellent choice! You'll be very happy once you taste it. 3640 and FHIA 18 are also great bananas. Congrats on the new plant!

Scot, Saturdays are good, but 9/20 I will be at the CRFG Festival of Fruit, speaking and selling plants (Figs and bananas). 9/27 morning and early afternoon I have a presentation at a local nursery. Then life settles down, hopefully. In my dreams.

Jen, It is actually a Gluay Namwah (which I think is just Malay for "Banana Namwah"), and it actually performs a little better than the regular Dwarf Namwah. It is the one we looked at. Cute kids, too.

Jen, don't feel bad, I've been to Jon's place a couple of times and can't remember what I looked at after I've left. Part of my problem is that my eyes end up drifting off looking at another banana while Jon is still talking about the one we're next to!

How about the 7th or 13th? I am flexible. I have 2 other stops in SD to coordinate for this trip. Just let me know, thanks!

I've actually been there many times. I like to drive out there just for pleasure. The area is very similar to the landscape I grew up in.

Jon, that is right, I remember looking at the bigger one. It was a great size. I'm very excited about it and I can't wait to plant today. Thanks for letting the whole family bombard you.

Harvey..it is so true I was just soaking it all in. :)
