My Dwarf Brazilian doesn't appear to be, shall we say, Dwarf. What's up with that. My gutters are a solid 10'.

Either it's not a dwarf, or you've been using too much uranium nitrate, or both!

It could also be stretching for sunlight. It looks to be in a rather shady area.

But I do agree, it looks to tall and thin for dwarf.

People vary in height, why can't dwarfs? Let it fruit and enjoy it. Taste is everything.

Either way I think it's a beautiful plant. :)

Hmmm that is a biggie for a dwarf. Your just taking too good care of it. :) j/k Where did you get this banana? Are you sure it's what it says it is? It really does look healthy and good. What is behind it with those darker red leaves. Very nice looking garden you got there.

I have a ? for you. I'm wanting to plant some bananas in my side yard but it gets a lot of shade. This looks like a shade area your growing in is it?

Actually, this area gets full sun for most of the day. I took this picture in the late afternoon. This is just a little covey-hole in my garden. I use these bananas for partial shading for various cold hard palm seedlings. In this picture you can see my "Dwarf" Brazilian, Dwarf Orinoco, Musa Basjoo and Musa Zebrina. I have another seven(7) or so species of bananas scattered around in different quantities. I'm into Bananas, Aroid, Cannas, Gingers, Palms and Cycads. Heck, pretty much anything tropical looking.

My Dwarf Brazilian is sporting a flag leaf. It's emerging at a height of 7 feet (2.1 meters) from the ground level.

Got my Dwarf Brazilians from Rmplmnz. Him and I both have the Tall versions too. My DBs hit about 14-15' to the top of the tallest leaf. And the trunk is a solid 12 inches thick.
My Tall Brazilians top out around 22'. And my shorter ones look like yours does.

No, thank-you Richard. These plants eat your fertilizer buddy. Thank-you for the 8 blooms we have in our back yard.

An established, well fed and pruned 'Dwarf Brazilian' can get to about 12ft pseudostem, even though they typically fruit for the first time around 5-7ft. They also seem to have a slower build up to their full size potential, perhaps after 3-4 fruitings they can be full size.

Mine fruited at about 7' of pstem height this year after only being planted in the ground this spring. It will be interesting to see if successive generations get taller before they fruit. I was certainly surprised when this one threw a bud this year.

Here's the fruit emerging from my Dwarf Brazilian, and in the background you can see a Dwarf Namwa bunch.

Well, that bunch is still plumping out and might be ready to cut on the 4th of July.

In the meantime, some enterprising birds have built a woven nest on the outside of an opposing leaf. The nest is about 15 centimeters (6 inches) tall.

Pretty substantial nest. Do you know what kind of birds they are?

I believe it is Bullock's Scott's Oriole. The birds are in my yard but I haven't seen them near the nest since I noticed it.

I was going to say it looked like an Orole's nest. We have Baltimore Orioles here, but I didn't think you had them in California, so I didn't say anything.

It's dark, so I don't have a picture, but I'm pretty impressed with my ole Dwarf Brazilian clump. The nasty winter killed everything to the ground, but now, I have 7 plants coming up. The tallest has 10' of pseudostem and 18' of total height. The habit is very vertical in the clump (probably due to the surrounding light competition). I'm very interested to see where this thing ends the growing season. I still have 4 months of good growing season before these shut down. Only half way through the season.
