Having experienced a Cat 3 and a Cat 4, gas prices are the least of a person's worries. Finding your house becomes the most important thing. For us along the Gulf Coast, this time of year is very worrisome.

Having survived a category 4 tornado which did over $129,000 worth of damage to my house in 1993. My hart certainly goes out to you all living in the gulf coast. I can only imagine what it's like to be in a hurricane.! Good luck! And Gods speed to you.

Stay safe everyone! Glad to hear that Steve... grab your favorite nana and toss it in the car if you can!
If you have children they can each hold one in their laps in the back seat, complaining and wondering about Daddy's sanity!
Seriously though... I'm glad you're not going to take chances.

Well Gustav has pretty much cleared the Dominican Republic leaving 8 dead on the south coast and 1000's displaced by the flooding. I have just heard from a contact with the UN in Haiti that they have it very bad on the south of the island. So far 2 dead and a ship has broken loose in Jacmel and demolished the wharf and caused a lot of damage. This is bad news as they possibly will not be able to bring in aid through there now. Because of the severe winds and heavy rain people are seeking shelter in more substantial buildings where they can. Pray for the Cayman Islands especially Cayman Brac as it is very low-lying, and next on the list tomorrow, and they have nowhere to go.

Oh my gosh Cassie that gave me instant goose bumps. To face that with no where to go. All of the people in these beautiful areas that face this danger each year have got to be the strongest, tightest knit people. Pulling together and re-building over and over. I'm not just talking about the islands, I'm talking about all of you in the U.S. that are in hurricane paths also.
It's good to know that you have some safety net with the mountains where you are Cassie. We have always had that where ever we've lived in tornado areas also. As luck would have it we are always right on the outer edge of whatever local tornado alley is in the area.

Steve,
If it looks like it's coming for you, you've got a place here with me and my wife if you need it. Bad thing is, no further away than you are, it could make a turn overnight and be on our doorstep the next morning! Yeah, not a fun time of year. Anyhow, call me if you need a place to stay.

Thanks Brent. It's still too early to tell where he might strike but we are certainly not out of the woods. I appreciate the offer of staying with you. Unfortunately, I've got an elderly mother to take care of. I'm on my bank's emergency response team so I will have to get back to Lake Charles immediately after the storm passes to survey the branch damage. It would just be too far to travel from your house to Lake Charles. I've got to be no more than 1.5 hours away from LC. We've been through this before with Rita. Hopefully, we'll do a better job afterwards. Thanks again.

OK, just wanted to make the offer. I think it only took us about an hour and a half to get to your place back in the spring. So the offer still stands if you need a place to go. I'm amongnst those considered essential personnel here at my work too, so I know how you feel.

New reports coming in from my contacts in Haiti -
The road from Port-au-Prince to the Dominican Republic is currently
flooded and impassable. · MINUSTAH Operations reports to date (8/28, 10:00 a.m.): 12 are dead and 9 injured as a result of the storm.
The Embassy Warden in Jacmel reported that Jacmel and its environs were hard hit by the T.S. Gustav’s heavy rains, winds and flash flooding, and that the flood waters are anywhere from two to six feet deep. People are in need of food and shelter in this region.
The Embassy Warden in Jeremie reported this morning that the
Grand’Anse River has overflowed its banks and that roads are impassable.
This could be another bad one, so stay safe all in its path especially if it heads to the New Orleans area!!

I lost a lot of plants. Raja Puri snapped , all my Maurelii are uprooted or leaning, several other bananas are uprooted and trees down all over the neighborhood . There's a downed tree one road over that took out some lines.
My orinoco has a bunch on it and did fine with no support ! It's in a corner so it had some protection.

Well, Gustav is ripping up my banana leaves right now!!! Wind gusts at my house have been to 30 mph, and my bananas are taking the burnt of the wind. Many of the leaves are shredded and ripped. I fully expect all the leaves to be ripped by the time this event is over for us.

Pete, that really blows. I thought you were far enough inland that maybe the wind wouldn't affect you too badly. Sorry for your plant losses. Hopefully you and your family are all OK, though. Don't worry about shipping to me this week. Sounds like you've got your hands full. You can send in a week or two when you get things back to normal.

Arkansas is taking the brunt of Gustav now...
843 PM CDT TUE SEP 2 2008
...GUSTY WINDS CONTINUING TO BRING DOWN TREES...
VERY GUSTY WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV ARE
CONTINUING TO BRING DOWN TREES AND POWER LINES.
MAXIMUM WIND GUSTS HAVE GENERALLY BEEN IN THE 30 TO 35 MPH RANGE...
BUT THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW GUSTS OF 40 TO 45 MPH. WITH THE GROUND NOW
SATURATED FROM RAIN...SUCH WINDS ARE ENOUGH TO BRING DOWN SOME TREES
WITH SHALLOW ROOTS.
AGAIN...THESE WINDS ARE BEING CAUSED BY A LOW PRESSURE CENTER
THAT IS THE REMAINS OF GUSTAV...NOT BY THUNDERSTORMS.
WINDY CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT TONIGHT...SO MORE FALLEN
TREES AND POWER OUTAGES CAN BE EXPECTED.
MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ON THE ALERT FOR LIMBS AND TREES ON SOME
ROADWAYS. THIS WILL BE A GREATER HAZARD DURING THE HOURS OF DARKNESS
WHEN HAZARDS IN THE ROAD ARE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO SEE.
-----------------------------------------------
622 PM CDT TUE SEP 2 2008
...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT WEDNESDAY...
...LAKE WIND ADVISORY IS CANCELLED...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LITTLE ROCK HAS ISSUED A WIND
ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT WEDNESDAY. THE LAKE
WIND ADVISORY HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
WINDS FROM THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV WILL BE OVER MUCH OF ARKANSAS
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING. EAST WINDS OF 25 TO 30 MPH...
WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH...WILL BE POSSIBLE. WITH THE GROUND
SATURATED...TREE ROOTS WILL WEAKEN AND TREES WILL BE ABLE TO BE BLOWN
DOWN MORE EASILY.
A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WINDS EXCEEDING 25 MPH ARE EXPECTED.
WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH
PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.
-----------------------------------------------
907 PM CDT TUE SEP 2 2008
...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING...
THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR
* PORTIONS OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS...NORTH CENTRAL ARKANSAS...
SOUTHEAST ARKANSAS...SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS AND WESTERN ARKANSAS...
INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS...IN CENTRAL ARKANSAS...CONWAY...
FAULKNER...GARLAND...GRANT...LONOKE...PERRY...POPE...PRAIRIE...
PULASKI...SALINE...WHITE AND YELL. IN NORTH CENTRAL ARKANSAS...
BAXTER...BOONE...CLEBURNE...MARION...NEWTON...SEARCY...STONE
AND VAN BUREN. IN SOUTHEAST ARKANSAS...ARKANSAS...BRADLEY...
CLEVELAND...DESHA...DREW...JEFFERSON AND LINCOLN. IN SOUTHWEST
ARKANSAS...CALHOUN...CLARK...DALLAS...HOT SPRING...OUACHITA
AND PIKE. IN WESTERN ARKANSAS...JOHNSON...LOGAN...MONTGOMERY...
POLK AND SCOTT.
* THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING.
* RAINFALL...ASSOCIATED WITH TROPICAL DEPRESSION GUSTAV...WILL
CONTINUE TO OVERSPREAD THE AREA. ABUNDANT MOISTURE ASSOCIATED
WITH THIS TROPICAL SYSTEM WILL PRODUCE COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF
RAINFALL...ESPECIALLY WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
* BETWEEN 3 AND 10 INCHES OF RAINFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER THE
WATCH AREA BEFORE THE STORM SYSTEM MOVES OUT OF THE STATE LATER
IN THE WEEK. DUE TO THE HEAVY RAINFALL...FLASH FLOODING WILL BE
POSSIBLE.
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.
---------------------------------------
722 PM CDT TUE SEP 2 2008
THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR A LARGE PART OF ARKANSAS.
.DAY ONE...TONIGHT
THE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE GUSTAV WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT THE AREA.
HEAVY RAINFALL IS EXPECTED TONIGHT OVER MOST OF ARKANSAS. RAINFALL
AMOUNTS WILL LIKELY AVERAGE 2 TO 4 INCHES BY MORNING...WITH SOME
HEAVIER AMOUNTS. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT.
ALSO...SEVERE WEATHER WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THIS SYSTEM...AS THERE
WILL BE TURNING OF WINDS WITH HEIGHT. AREAS IN NORTH CENTRAL AND
NORTHEAST ARKANSAS APPEAR TO HAVE THE GREATEST CHANCE OF SEVERE
WEATHER...PRIMARILY THIS EVENING. DAMAGING WINDS AND ISOLATED
TORNADOES ARE THE MAIN CONCERNS.
WITH INTENSE LOW PRESSURE OVER THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE
STATE...WINDS WILL BE GUSTY. A WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT. WIND
GUSTS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WILL BE COMMON...AND SOME GUSTS WILL EXCEED 40
MPH. WITH THE GROUND NOW SOGGY FROM RAIN...THESE WINDS WILL BE
SUFFICIENT TO BLOW DOWN SOME TREES.
.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY
HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE STATE INTO WEDNESDAY...AS
THE AREA OF RAINFALL MOVES TO THE NORTH AND EAST. A FLASH FLOOD
WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOR MUCH OF
THE STATE. AVERAGE RAINFALL AMOUNTS ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN
AREAS WILL BE TWO TO FIVE INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HEAVIER AMOUNTS.
PORTIONS OF WESTERN ARKANSAS COULD RECEIVE MORE THAN EIGHT INCHES OF
RAIN WITH THIS SYSTEM. RIVERS...SMALL STREAMS...AND LOW WATER
CROSSINGS ACROSS THIS AREA COULD SEE RAPID RISES DUE TO THE
EXCESSIVE RAINFALL.
SEVERE WEATHER WILL BE POSSIBLE AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY...AS THE STATE
WILL REMAIN ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE TROPICAL SYSTEM. DAMAGING
WINDS AND ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL ONCE AGAIN BE THE SEVERE WEATHER
CONCERNS.
THE WIND ADVISORY WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT ON WEDNESDAY AS WELL.
A COLD FRONT WILL APPROACH THE STATE FROM THE NORTH WEDNESDAY NIGHT
INTO THURSDAY. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY MOVE THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV AWAY
FROM ARKANSAS. HOWEVER...IT WILL ALSO ALLOW FOR MORE SHOWER AND
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WITH THE TROPICAL MOISTURE...AND MAY
PROLONG THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL OVER THE STATE THROUGH THURSDAY.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT RESIDENTS AND EMERGENCY MANAGERS MONITOR THE
LATEST FORECASTS...INCLUDING WATCHES AND WARNINGS...FROM YOUR
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REGARDING THIS FLOODING AND SEVERE WEATHER
SITUATION.
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
SPOTTER ACTIVATION MAY BE REQUIRED THIS EVENING...WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY.

We are being lashed by Hanna tonight - rain and wind breaking trees - my nanas with heavy fruit are protected by walls so I hope I won't have to cut them off in the morning. Ike and Josephine are also heading our way but we can handle it! haha! At least it is not boring!!

Pete,
Sorry to hear about your losses. We were lucky this time around here in Lake Charles, but the hurricane season in not over. Sometimes, these storms do as much damage a day after coming onshore as they do when they hit. There was a tornado in Mamou this morning that killed a person. This is 2 days after the storm went through. Stay safe.

Thanks Steve ,
I hadn't even considered all of the things associated with a storm like this . My Managers' home flooded last night and she's there today trying to save all of her things.
Tornados are the scariest things to me. I was very afraid for the people in the areas with all the strong cells.
I don't mind losing plants at all as long as my house and family are O.K.
