My name is Tom Beckham. I live in Pawleys Island, SC (just south of Myrtle Beach - growing zone 8). I own an irrigation supply store in Murrells Inlet (Seafood capital of SC), and also operate a charter boat (SOUTHERN EXPOSURE). I just found this site. Seems to have a lot of good info here. I have always been interested in tropical and sub-tropical plants, bananas in particular. I purchased 12 plants this summer in 3 to 5 gallon pots. I have planted all of them in the yard with drip irrigation to keep them happy. I have several friends that have productive bananas, and hope to maybe trade some pups with them to get a good variety. I also hope to meet some new people here that are as bananas as I am.

Welcome! Wish I had seen your post yesterday - just bought a drip system. Would like to see you tell us more in a new thread about the do's and don'ts of drip irrigation systems. I am sure many of us are interested in learning more.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I am a little slow at getting back to things at the moment. I am trying to prepare my businesses for my being gone for a while (having back surgery), plus I just got another basset hound (7 months) and he is a character!. My yard (in Pawleys Island, SC) is being neglected because of all of this, but we have to keep things in the proper perspective..... I just went and bought 3 more banana plants!! Have to keep my mind right!
For those of you that need info on drip systems.. you can go as simple or as elaborate as you wish. I have several systems in the yard. In the back yard I use a battery operated timer that is connected directly to the faucet. I have it set for 10 minutes a day. I have a garden hose connected to that and on the end, a 25PSI pressure regulator. That is connected to blank drip line (no holes in it) to that I have spaghetti tube connected and run to the base of each plant. It trickles there from the emitters to soak the area. In the front yard, I have a 1" electric valve which is controlled as a zone by the irrigation timer. From there, the 1" pipe carries water to several saddles which branch off with Blu Lock tubing to each plant. I have a bubbler at he base of each plant. This system is good for any plant that needs a lot of water. The bubbler or emitter used with either system can be controller for volume at each individual plant. I will be happy to answer any questions o the subject, as I am sure that I will have questions for you guys.
Now I just have to get these 3 new ones in the ground to join their new family. Not counting the pups (and I need to remove and replant a dozen or so) I now have 15 bananas, 2 Birds of Paradise, 2 Plumeria, An angel's Trumper, and a Snowball bush in the yard! (plus a heck of a lot of ferns and weeds!!!)
Thanks again! PawleysIslandDog

Tom,
Welcome aboard!
I'm looking for a deal on misting emitters.....(didn't they tell you about the nefariousness of the poor banana grower)?

Yeah... when these plants grab you, you are just addicted to their evil wishes!
This link is to the mister I have on hand. You can cut and paste it to your browser. If it does not get you there, let me know.
