View Full Version : Mysore & Ladyfinger...same thing?
I was told my banana was possibly a Mysore. Is that the same thing as a Ladyfinger. One website said it is the same thing they just call them Mysore's because they are grown in the mysore region. Other web sites adverstise to sell them as two seperate plants. Thanks for any input.

Gabe, please correct me if I'm wrong! I believe Ladyfinger is a member of the Pome group of bananas, with AAB genetics. Mysore also has AAB genetics, but is a different cultivar. To make it more fun, there is an entire group of bananas named Mysore, which includes these cultivars:
Belle
Chini Champa
Kappa Pazham
Karpuravalli
Kathali
Kluai Nom Sawan
Kunnan
Mysore
Nendran
Pisang Ceylon
Rajapuri
Safet Velchi
Walha
... at least according to published papers and the database (Musa Germplasm Information System) at Banana Bioversity International -- - Banana Home (http://bananas.bioversityinternational.org/).
Wow...and I thought I was confused before. :) Hmmmmm So I guess I just don't know what I have. I will continue to call it a Mysore and read about that I guess. It will probably be close enough to give it the right care. Thanks Richard....as always. :)

Jen, if it is a fruiting banana that prefers full sun then the water, soil, and nutrition requirements are essentially the same. There are very few fruiting bananas that prefer shade -- and yours appears to be enjoying the sun. So I would continue to give it regular water and a fertilizer with N-P-K that is high in nitrogen (N), low in phosphorus (P), and high in potassium (K). Ideally, the K should be 1.5 times the N value. But otherwise, an inexpensive plant food like 12-5-10 or 8-4-8 is great.
