I am sooo jealous of everyone's blooms/fruit as I have yet to have any except on my velutina. Anyway, just thought I would post a couple of pics of what I have...

First off, I thought I would post a pic of what my yard looks like from the road. The 'WALL' or fence is 12' at the corner...

Velutina had a rough year... I think I took too many divisions off it.

Thanks for the pics Randy, your plants are awesome, wish I could get that kind of growth here in N.Illinois, all mine are in pots, next year after the final frost, I'm putting my Basjoo's in the ground and maybe a couple of the others, gotta read up some more on the Dwarf Cav. as its been in the big bucket since last July, and needs more root space. :bananas_b

Randy, that Musa balbisiana 'Gigantea' looks great! Mine is about that tall, but still in a pot if you can imagine. Your 'Balboa Park' M. sikkimensis hybrid looks nice also. Heck, it all looks good! I took some pics today of the Musa velutina that you gave to me, and that I then divided and gave some to the UT Gardens. There is one bloom, and another one coming soon.

Thanks, Frank!!! I really do like the look of the gigantea's leaves. They are so different than the others. I am amazed at the size of the leaves on such small pups... Glad to hear the velutina is finally do well for you. As far as the 'Balboa' goes, this is my second try with it and Rob was kind enough to give me one that had a little more size to it. I am looking forward to seeing what it will do in the future. You still need to come down!!!

Deb

Deb, these are pups that came up from the mother corm this spring. The main pstem didn't overwinter as well as I had hoped, so I think I will treat them like the basjoo with the exception of a layer of plastic and then several more inches of mulch... Hope this works, but I feel it will be fine...

Thanks... Some of the plants are new and I will be testing some of them. If there are pups on some of the questionable ones, I will dig them and leave some out to try and see how they do... Will be interesting to see how it does over the winter...

Okay first your yard looks amazing. Very nice! That Zebrinus is so tropical looking and so pretty with the red in it.

My leaves look similar to your "Balboa Park" I searched for this trying to find out what it is and I can't seem to find it. Does is have another name. Sorry for my newbieness. :)

Thanks Jen, for the compliment. As far as the 'Balboa Park', we are still not exactly sure what it is. A friend of mine brought some seeds back from San Diego's Balboa Park a couple of years ago, and got the plants started. There are a few of us that have one and some discussions have been started concerning what it is exactly. We do believe it is a sikkimensis of some sort, but other than that, no one seems to know.

Here is all the info that has been discussed on this plant...

Awsome choice of plants Randy, and they look like your giving them lots of attention.
I too am impressed with your balbisiana 'Gigantea', it's got a really thick p-stem, maybe it will get Saba like proportions?
Anyways good job!

Thanks for the compliment, Kyle. Coming from you, that means alot. I am indeed looking forward to seeing what this gigantea is going to doing for me. I got it from BigDog and he seems very optimistic about it... Time will tell, I suppose...

Thanks for that link. That was interesting. I'm still learning how to tell them apart and I love reading about the different varieties. It will be interesting to see when it blooms what it looks like. It's beautiful no matter what it is I guess. :) Congrats and I'm sure you will see blooms soon. They look very well cared for.

What a great collection, Randy! You're definitely the master gardener. May I dub you king of the Tennessee bananas? Every time I see a pic of your garden, I'm wowed! The palms and bananas just fit in perfectly with your nice pool too. Keep up the hard work; it's really quite impressive.

Thanks Austin... Please don't put the label of Master Gardener on me... I am just a guy who like to drag water hoses around ALOT!!! As far as the king of the Tennessee banana, it think would have to actually go to BigDog as he has way more experience and knowledge than I do, I just get them and stick them in the ground and water, water, water....
I do appreciate the compliment, though...

Tennessee Banana ...reminds me of 'Tennessee Williams'
Randy ,be on the lookout for interesting sports on your Williams Cavendish next year . You could name them: Musa 'Tennessee Williams' Cavendish.
(all's fair in marketing nowadays) :ha:

BTW..when I first saw your 'hat' pics I had to check 'who's online' to make sure Richard was o.k. .
J/k Richard....I have the same hat :D

Great to see your sabas are doing so well. Mine had done very poorly this year along with my goldfinger. The Orinocos are doing great. They pup so much I don't know what to do with them all. I have given tons away to people around me.
