Hello All,
My Brazilian flowered today :woohoonaner:. One problem, the last flower was consumed by the humming birds. The flower hung down and the little flying insects eat the crap out of my prize. Any suggestions? I would love to get bananas.

Normally the first (female) flowers/fruits stick and the later male flowers/fruits drop. Do you mean you had no fruits stick at all? I have hummingbirds and bananaquits around my plants all the time with no ill-effects. Nice garden btw!

All the hummers want is the nectar. Sometimes they eat bugs, for nutrition. They don't even bother my fruits. I love how that sounds...my fruits...:woohoonaner: Once the flower withers, they are on to the next newer flowers.
Are you sure another type of bird or some insect isn't doing the damage? Ants do a good job of dominating every plant in my yard, little black bugs like my peaches, the house finches love my cherries, and the friggin' rats love my nectarines. I can hardly wait to see what will love my bananas...:ha::drum::lurk:

The fruits dropped but only 5 or 6 bananas formed and stayed small green and hard. The hummung birds did go for the nectar.

Thank you regarding the garden. Tomorrow I lay the flag stone for the patio. When it is done I will post pictures.

The 5 or 6 that stuck are your bunch then, and you will be picking them in 3 to 4 months time! (Not sure how long Brazillians take to ripen).
