Stopped into Home Depot the other day for work and these caught my eye. The tags said Musa zebrina 'rojo' and Musa bordelon.

Not exactly sure what they are. They were nice looking, so in the shopping cart they went. The labels said Stacey's Greenhouses in York SC. I have an email into them to figure what type they may be. Any opinions?

I have no idea because I'm a total newbie but I just had to say how pretty those were. I LOVE the red in the leaves. I'm going to get some more bananas and I just have to have one with red in it. The red and green are so striking together. Lucky girl you! Those are PRETTY!

I didn't finish my post and somehow posted it prematurely . I was looking for some pics of mine blooming .
I actually went outside to compare and they are sooo close at that stage. But because of the heighth(compared to leaf size) and the bronze on em I thought they looked like Bordelon . Plus ,the leaf bases are attatched .
They should definately be hardy in your zone . I'm in 8a and both come back for me each year . It takes the zebrina at least a month longer to emerge but it does fine .

This is a drawing from Gabe15's gallery :

Zebrina (rojo) would look more like the one on the left and Bordelon like the one on the right.

Check around the big box stores. They are panicking, not wanting to get stuck with inventory for the winter, its a fire sale.

HD also had this(or something very similar) listed as Musa rajapuri. I'm certain it is not, but it was $8.43 as well. I think its Alocasia lauterbaachiana. The picture is from Agristarts.

O.K. I deleted the diagram for now because I realized that I didn't have permission to use it .
I'll try to post some pics in the next few weeks .
When this plant gets older it looses the pretty splotches and becomes O.D. green with bronzish / red underneath . The bunches are long skinny things like ornata ,but more 'wirey', that try to be upright but droop over. I know that proly doesn't make any sense but I'm tryin '...lol

Randy4ut posted that in another thread . He bought one along with some other good deals . SOO , if they have it in S.C. AND in TN. perhaps I should check out my local hd and try to get in on the 'fire sale'.

lauterbaachiana has purple backsides of leaves and won't show the blue color until it's about a year old. FYI. Your bananas look like a couple of bordelons to me. Zebrinas usually have wider leaves.

I agree. They look like mine. Great find! Good luck with them. The other place to look for cheap plants is craigslist. Last month I picked up 8 - 24 inch boxes of black bamboo for $40 per box. We had to make two trips with the truck. Tomorrow I will be picking up 4 - 8 foot apple bananas and 2 - 8 foot ice creams in 5-gallons for $15.00 each. Craigslist!
