beautiful plant and flowers and doesn't look like cuban or jamaican red. I haven't been able to find any pics of tall reds - anyone have any idea what it might be - plant very tall - pstem to bud about 18ft.
Thanks

Wonderful - thanks guys! I hadn't been able to bring up a picture of "tall red" but it obviously wasn't cuban red or jamaican red. I don't have any other reds, but I did see one flowering locally that I can now compare to mine. If it is different, I will get a pup - don't want any duplicates!

Is Tall Red and African Red the same?
Taylor
08-19-2008, 09:01 AM
No. African Red is an ornamental type.
Tall Jamaican, Jamaican Red, Tall Red...all the same.
Like: Dwarf Red, Dwarf Jamaican...same.

Rmplmnz - no I don't have a dwarf red and don't recall seeing any around. The colour on this fruit is very intense - more purple than red really, and the hands are very widely spaced.

Cassie,
Didn't you just start growing bananas last year? You would never know it with all this success you are having!!!
No problem...there are more synonyms too, but those are just the common ones.

Sorry for the delay in replying Taylor - puter probs! Thanks for the compliments - I got my first plants in about March 2006 but in Feb 2007 weedkiller drifted over from a nearby lot and killed them all. So I started again with an apple from Jarred (thank you again) and an unknown that I found floating in the lagoon, and my oldest plants are 18 months old. Now I have had fruit off the tall orinoco, dwarf orinoco, tall red and dwarf cavendish, and am expecting great things from the ice cream and manzano. My ladyfinger and 1000 fingers are coming along well and I have 3 mystery nanas making 11 varieties. But don't forget that they grow easily here - it is a banana republic after all!! lol

Here are the latest pictures of the tall red just in case one of the next storms hit us before they ripen!!

Not many hands of fruit, and the male flowers hang on - normally I would cut the bud off - but I was waiting to see what this one did. If the weather gets bad I will get the machete out!!

Now the fruits are very full and changing colour to the sunset colours of ripe fruit - but the first flowers appeared on the 13th August which makes it only 11 weeks or just under 3 months to ripen. Is this possible? Most of my others take at least 3.5 to 4 months to ripen on the plant, and I don't want to cut them down prematurely, but I don't want them to split either! Photos tomorrow! I have a big bunch of premature dc's just ripening in the garage that a windstorm blew over, and the pstem was too mashed to be able to prop up.

Do these look ready to cut? It is so soon at nearly 12 weeks as all my others have taken nearly 16 weeks! Any other growers with experience?

I seem to remember reading that some of the reds need to be nearly black before they are ripe. I would think Jarred, Gabe, Rmplmnz, or Pitandiego would be able to shed a little light on this for you.

I think you are probably right Brent - I cut 1 finger yesterday just to get a close look at it, and it is hard as iron and much greener looking than I thought. From what I saw on the mat that mine came from - they go really yellow/sunset coloured when ripe, so I will just be patient but it is hard to wait when it is the very first bunch off a particular plant! They probably need another 4 to 5 weeks.

Cut a hand off these about a week ago, and then another today when I noticed they were starting to split. The fruit is still hard but I will cut the rest down tomorrow (well when I say I will - you know what I mean...they will!) and I think they are ready to ripen in the garage in a very short time. When they are ripe and soft, rather like Orinoco, they are gorgeous, pale orange flesh and sweet delicious taste. I think I will take out one of my three dc's and plant the space up with more reds.

Congrats again Cassie! Great harvest, you will enjoy those when they ripen!
I cannot blame you for replacing a DC mat with those :) They taste delicious and are such a beautiful plant to watch go through the various growth stages.

Daen - they have a very intense banana flavour and each finger weighs 12oz/350g. Fruit for sharing!

Hi Cassie,
I am pretty late on this scene cos I just saw the thread. We have the Red here by another name, Pisang Raja Udang = King Prawn banana.
We normally leave it on the plant for about 16wks before cutting it. Then it takes almost another 2 wks to get to the orange ripening color. We can't leave it too long to ripen naturally cos when they do ripen, especially with the heat here, they really ripen fast. From a humble 3 plts we had at our nursery some years ago, we now have 140+ plants of various ages, so we get the 'naners all year round. It was my crazy partner's idea to have this many as he enjoys giving them away to friends as 'goodwill' presents. Oh yea, I love them too and gobble off a ot when they are available!:ha:

Yes Tog - these sound similar - 15.5 wks on the plant and 1-2 weeks hanging up to get the full sunset effect. We only have a small garden, but I keep digging things out to make room for more 'naners. Great to give away what we can't eat, and best of all - the fruit keeps coming.
