Last summer I planted a Saba in front of the family house on Edisto Beach here in South Carolina. It was on the west side of the house. There was a lot of wind damage, but the tree is robust.

About a half mile down the beach, I saw a nice matt of tall bananas on the east side of the house. There is less leaf damage. The close up shows what I believe to be a bunch of bananas. It was private property, so I did not investigate further. The matt also looks pretty well untended.

I decided to try to grow a matt of Brazilians on the east side of our house. It is close to the ocean, but right near our outside shower, to give it extra water.

We don't get too much east wind until the winter north easters blow in. I 'll be interested to see how the leaves do in the salt air. We rarely get overwash from high tides, but I have seen that happen too.

Does anyone else have experience with beach-side bananas?

Oh man!!! That is a great view, and healthy bananas, too. Good Job!

What significance does "BANANA TREES" on the side of your Van mean?
Thanks...

Wish I could help you with your question but I'm just enjoying the view from your pictures!! Maybe you can catch the neighbors down the road outside sometime and talk bananas!

Not much to this thread.
I sometimes sell them here on Saturday mornings for fun and to escape my 'real' job:

Thanks. Its not really my home, as I live in Charleston on the Simply Bananas Banana Plantation.:ha::ha:http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3218 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3217)
Our family rents that beach house out during the summer. We get to share it the other 9 cooler months.

Nice beach house....

Frank has an amazing collection of bananas! His booth at the farmers market is definitely a positive influence on Charleston gardeners - it is a very well attended market. (His yard looks like the tropics, too):ukkibannana:

Hi Porkpi - we have nanas growing about 100 ft from the high water mark sheltered by seagrape and dominican almond trees so I think they have more shelter than you, but they rarely show signs of salt damage. Also we cut a pup off a plant that had washed down the river into a salty lagoon and had been lying on the beach for a while. It was kinda slow to start growing but is doing fine now with no visible effect from the salt water. However if a big storm sandblasted the plants with salty water and sand, there would be damage! Perhaps it might be worth hosing the salt off the leaves after a storm and giving them a good washdown. All my plants that grow above the protective palm hedges have shredded leaves as we are in a windy area but show no ill-effects apart from tatters.
