I haven't been paying near enough attention to my plants; maybe this will bring me back to reality. (Been way too involved in a MMORPG) :)

Wow! Someone still has Gros Michel. That was my first banana, about 30 years ago. At, that time all I knew was that they were bananas, and I thought it might be cool to grow some here. We were in St. Lucia, at my wife's boss' vacation house, and he arranged for me to get a couple of corms to bring back. I planted them in big redwood tubs, and had them in a rec room, in front of sliding glass patio doors. When they started pushing the tiles out of the suspended ceiling, we decided they had to go, so we brought them to the boss (mentioed above) who had an indoor pool. They thrived there, and even had fruit.
Since then, Ive read stories that all the Gros Michel in the world had been destroyed by Panama Disease, or something like it, many years prior to that. Obviously, that was wrong.
Here's a picture of me (about a hundred years ago), with a bunch of Gros Michel.

At least that's what it's supposed to be. I'm just surprised that one is blooming. The plant is around four years old, and quite crowded. I guess we will have to wait and see what the fruit looks like... :)

Cool pic's! I just got a Gros Michel last week and it's still inside as I get it acclimated to the desert climate. Quite challenging, but it is working so far.

It wasn't so much all of the Gros Michels in the world, as the monocultured ones in the big plantations in the banana republics, like Panama and Ecuador.
This said, private collectors kept it alive, and the ones that survived the Panama disease outbreak are still grown here in Ec, but more as a personal banana than a commercial one. In the farmer's markets here, they're called Sedas (silk bananas) and remain one of my favourite full-size nanners.

Paula - Yes, they are edible, and very good. Years ago, they were the main commercial banana.

Congratulations Anna! crowded or not, it's beautiful! Keep the pics coming!
I'd also like to get in line for a pup. I won't have to zig-zag back and forth like at Disneyland, will I? :ha:

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been away so long. I am little too involved with a certain MMORPG...
Anyway, I have bad news about my bloom. I neglected to prop up the plant, and, you guessed it; it broke and I lost the fruit. :( I am soooo upset at myself! I guess I will separate some of the pups now and pot them. The ones I can get to at least.

Did anything ever materialize from this? The Gros Michel was my first banana, from St. Lucia, when I knew nothing about naners. This was about 35 years ago.
