Hi:
I saw this recently at a local supermarket and thought about a variegated pineapple, so I bought it right away since I've been looking to get one for a while. The thing is that it had no I.D. other than "tropical foliage" when I bought it. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Carlos(tropicalkid)

It certainly looks similar, only mine looks to be a
pup.

I think you have a Cryptanthus. It's a bromeliad just like a pineapple but in another genus. Take a look at this site: http://members.iinet.com.au/~scrozier/gallery.html

I'm pretty sure you don't have a pineapple there, but it is a bromeliad. Here a couple of pictures of my variegated (and slow-growing) pineapple:

It is labeled as ananus lucida 'Striata'.

Yup, my guess - Cryptanthus bivittatus

http://members.iinet.com.au/~scrozier/crypt13.htm (http://members.iinet.com.au/%7Escrozier/crypt13.htm)

Cryptanthus bivittatus

Cryptanthus bivittatus var bivittatus C. bivittatus is a species cryptanthus, probably the most common cryptanthus in cultivation. There are many different varieties ( cultivars ) of this species, for example "Ruby", "Pink Starlite", "Honolulu Starlite" http://members.iinet.com.au/%7Escrozier/crypt13b.jpg
Cryptanthus bivittatus var "Pink Starlite"

It is nice, though!
I collect bromeliads as well...

Hi,
This fabulous bromeliad is called Ananas Bracteatus Var. Tricolor. You can look it up here...

http://fcbs.org/pictures.htm

There are several varieties and they all do the pineapples.

that would be the variegated pineapple, not the one Carlos (tropicalkid) posted
Do you have a positive ID on his bromeliad, by any chance?

Hi Jarred, Thanks for the invite!
Sorry I posted that twice.
It is listed in the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies web site. That is the link I put in that post.

Julie,
I got the other plants in the mail yesterday. Thank you so much for everything. You're a doll.

If anyone here wants awesome bromeliads, check out Julie's ebay auctions:

The post office lost the package she sent me, so she replaced it n/c and threw in a bunch of other bonus broms. Gestures like that deserve credit. :drum:

Check out her store! You won't be disappointed!

Thanks again, Julie.

Just wanted to point out that the Crypthantus bromeliad is for sale. It's very healthy and growing strong. I just don't have much space and still want to buy a pineapple. P.M. me if interested. Can provide more recent photos.

fwiw,
In Living Color here in S. Florida has a variegated pineapple for sale that's spineless. It looks very similar to the ones posted in this thread, but it's without the sharp spines.
