a question: how much leaves/leafs is it growing in one week?

Dablo - I don't know because there are so many of them. I will try to keep a record for you.

Dablo - as far as I can tell, they each get a new leaf every 5 days.

The monster is now so big that I can't get a picture of it in it's entireity because of its location - but measuring around the main pstem 12 inches above the ground (too many pups to get lower) it measures 38 inches! No flag, even though I check each day (as a banana fiend should!). It is now much bigger than the large orinoco, and the entertainment value while waiting is enormous!!

no way Stumpy! I think we all suffer form that affliction to one degree or another. I check my bananas out every day some times more then ones. After all whats the point in having a garden if you don't look at it

Haha! Pauly - you make me laugh!

I can't tell about the number of leaves because it is above the roof of the house, and with 5 pups with 12ft of pstem and 2 more with about 7ft, it is one big heap of leaves, but it seems to be about 1 leaf each a week. The leaf petioles seem to be a bit weaker than other types, and when it gets windy (Ike and his pals) they bend next to the stem, so I have had to cut some off even tho' they were green.

OK - the ice cream/blue java has bloomed and how!! A huge bloom and lots of fingers in each hand.

Massive plant and it looks as though it will have lots of fruit in the bunch. I have been taking off the small pups and just leaving the 6 big ones - might ask the gardeners to take 1 or 2 off for me. While I have been thinning the hundreds of pups - the differences in the plants have been interesting. The DC's, Orinocos and Ice Cream have been easy to thin, but Red, plantain and Manzano have seen me off - and I will have to ask for help tomorrow - just so tough campared to the others!

Yeah! . . . . .
I told my wife. That's my only happiness.

Did you really tell your wife that ? ? ? ? ? ? The reason my wife lets me get my way most of the time is that I tell her that she is my only happiness!

I think this is going to be my biggest bunch ever - about 13 hands so far each of about 18 fingers. As you see I took off some leaves to get a clear view of the fruit as they form on this monster - even bigger than my Orinoco which is saying something. Pup was planted 2nd October 2007 and took off like a rocket. Mark - this one is twice the size it was when you saw it! Prolific pupper too as it has 6 left after I took off another 8. Love it!!

What I wouldn't do to have bananas like that growing in my yard here! Wow!!!

bencelest
11-30-2008, 09:29 PM
There's no way we can grow that kind of nanas in our zone. We'll just have to settle for less bunch. But they can not grow apples, cherries, oranges like we do here as an antidote for our feelings.

island cassie
11-30-2008, 10:56 PM
Yep Benny - I would die for cherries or stone fruit - tulips and daffodils too - but now I enjoy the moment!! Every region has its blessings and we should take advantage of them while we can. Can't grow tomatoes or peppers here either - too humid. So grow what you can and compost the rest is what I say! lol!

Wow, you will have lots of bananas alright. I need to stop looking in these threads or I'm going to think my IC's are sick next year. I'll be lucky if my main stem is as big and healthy looking as your pups, LOL. Congrats on the bloom and hands.

Sorry Guys and Dolls:
When I told my wife that I added of course, you are my only TRUE happiness.Bananas is only second. Heh-heh! It's hard to get out of that one.
But truly, she let me do what I want to do outside now. She used to complain a lot.
Now, I don't know. She does not even care what I spend on my projects. But then I don't use her credit card anymore. Maybe that's the answer.

Benny, you are a long time friend & I hope I didn't offend you.
But....you know that project that you've been working on? The sort-of-sunroom that you want plants, 'puter, sofa etc in? You might call it your own "doghouse" soon LOL.

If Mike told me "anything" was "his only happiness", I'd tell him the couch would be his 2nd happiness LOL :)
