Being a bonsai enthusiast actually, I am surprised to see a Bonsai banana since it doesn't really lend itself to the art very well. The leaves are too large and it grows from a corm - most difficult to control since bonsai involves trimming the central tap root. I have around 20 bonsai trees, but never considered Bananas to be one that I would try.
Mame is the smallest form of bonsai. I suppose that by keeping the corm confined it would limit growth, but that's a guess.

Although I think selling one on eBay is kinda crazy, because its very easy to do it yourself, a "bonsai" banana isn't really that far off. I gave a 'Little Prince' to a friend as a gift, and told them to keep it in the pot (about 4in) intending it to kinda be a bonsai type plant, after over a year it looks great and stays small (about 5 in) and continues to grow while maintaining a nice form, I don't know how long it will stay happy but its fine so far. I suppose this wouldn't be a conventional bonsai, but it can work...bananas are very good at staying small in pots while staying healthy and growing, they may not get big but they wont die.

Yeah, it had been a while since I heard the eBay song and I had to play it and it gave my wife a good chuckle since it fits me pretty well.....almost, anyways, though I have restrained myself in the past year to mostly plants than can always be composted if they die on me.

I have to say, though, that I've been limiting my purchases of purely ornamental plants. I almost bought a Siam 50/50 the other day but held back. With high fuel and resulting transportation costs, along with some concerns I have about the global economy in general, I have more of an urge to grow things that are actually useful producers of food rather than devoting energy sources to things that are purely ornamental. I don't believe zone 9 will ever allow me to grow bananas as a staple food item, but I can still get enjoyment out of them and get some fruits from time to time.

Just my $.02

Not any more. eBay changed the policy and the seller cannot leave negative feedback for a buyer. I don't know all of the reasons for this change, but I wish it was in place before I received my one bogus negative rating. I knew it would come, but the seller was bad and I decided I could afford the hit and it was worth warning others.

Problem with seller is that you sometimes see a feedback score of a couple thousand. So, why check? Dumb move. later on when you get burned you may find when you check feedback seller has 190 negatives. Of course the positives shown may be shown at 95% next to thier name along with the words power seller. So you trust them. In New Jersey we say "forget about it"

I have a 'Little Prince' that I got from Kylie last year. It was in about a 2-3" pot when I got it. Today it is in an 8" pot and is only about a foot tall, if that. I really like it, though I don't conisder it a bonsai as bonsai is an art form that requires specialized trimming and sometimes training the specimen to grow in a certain style/direction. It's a cool little plant for sure!

(3").. All my little pups are fat..I wonder what they are selling??

If you read my comments again, I did not say that bananas can't be grown as a food source in zone 9. On the contrary, I did say that we can get "some fruits from time to time." However, people in warmer zones have always been able to get larger bunches of bananas. I did say that I don't think they can be a staple food item. A staple food item is one that you can depend on to reliably meet your food requirements. Zone 9 will sometimes have a hard freeze that will sometimes have hard freezes that will wipe out the pseudostems of most banana plants, even of so-called hardy selections, and even some corms. After a week of temperatures in the low 20s in January 2007 I had 3 of 4 plants die back to the corm and the 4th died completely. I would have hated to depend on a diet of self-grown bananas for the rest of 2007. I suppose I could dry up a lot of bananas in preparation for a famine year, but that also requires extra energy. Nuts, temperate fruits, grains, etc. are much more reliable food sources in zone 9. I can grow all of those without any inputs from the outside while my bananas do require some protection in the coldest of years to survive.

I'm a third generation farmer in zone 9 and stand by my comments because I understand the limitations (and benefits) of my climate.

Gosh, I don't know, I haven't watched much TV for 10 years and haven't watched Let's Make a Deal for probably 25-30 years. My aunt and uncle were on about 30 or so years ago. Of course, it was pre-recorded, but they didn't tell us what they had won. It was very suspenseful! The also won $50 worth of Jiffy Pop popcorn which they mostly donated to a children's home. Why I remember some of these things is beyond me. I often think the we should be able to reformat our hard drive (brains). ;)

It actually ended up being a pretty good car for them and I don't remember if it was a fire hazard or not. They didn't get the car that day, so there probably was no risk to the popcorn involved! ;) I do remember a commercial for the car showing how someone could make a really wide sub sandwich in the back seat...maybe they had 3 Italian men in the back seat or something like that.

I wonder how many bananas the could fit in a Gremlin???????

No offense taken at all, Pauly. I'm a bit long-winded with comments at times so it can be easy to miss my central point.

My comments are influenced by the fact that I have been thinking more often about the possibility of a global economic collapse during my lifetime. With globalization we are so dependent on other countries. I don't even watch TV but the excesses of China sure are evident with the reports of the pollution there which they can't seem to even control during the Olympics. There may one day be massive food shortages....not because of over-population but, but because of disruptions in transportation due to fuel prices and/or collapsed economies. While I can raise more than enough food for myself and my family on my own farm, I would have to focus on things that required fewer inputs from outside sources (fertilizer, pesticides, electricity, etc.) and I might want to be further away from large cities since there would likely be large riots. This probably will not happen, but it's just something I am thinking I may want to plan for. Just in case! The Romans didn't believe their empire would collapse so why should we? Oh, back on topic: I probably would be growing very few bananas in such a situation.
