I'm new to central sc zone 8a. I'm interested in growing a variety of tropical or tropical looking plants. I have never seen any palms in the date family growing in my area. Will a medjool palm grow in zone 8a without turning brown in the winter? I already have the usual cold hardy palms- sago, pindo, palmetto, dwarf palmetto , european fan , and needle palms. I also wonder if I could grow sylvestor palms. I live in a rural, frosty area where the night temps dip into the mid teens 4-5 times each winter. Average high January temp is in the mid 50's. I look forward to learning and exchanging info.

Don't forget the Chinese Windmill Palm, Trachycarpus fortunei. Should do fine in 8A with protection. How is your Pindo doing? I'd love to try one. I have trachys, Needles, Sabal minor and Sabal texana, and even a Livistonia chinensis. All require winter mulching here in 7A, but then again so do my nanas. Welcome.:03:
