A local nursery has some variegated bananas for sale. Is there any way to id what variety they are? I asked them what variety they were and they just said varigated banana. They cost $195 each and are about five feet tall. You can visit ty ty nursery's website and see a picture on the homepage.
Thanks,

Welcome to TyTy Online Plant & Pecan Tree Nursery: The Nursery at TyTy (http://www.tytyga.com/) It's all the way down at the bottom. The ones for sale have more varigation than that picture.

Yeah, I've read several bad reviews of TyTy so be careful if you order anything from them. There website is good for a laugh, though. Some "interesting" pictures on there!

I agree not an Ae Ae! There are many other places to buy from.

Well, to me it looks like an Ae-Ae. But then, it could be a Variegated Basjoo, too, but I've never seen one. I realize that they've not been the role model for customer service, and there are a lot of complaints against them. In all honesty, I have been very satisfied with my orders from them in the early 90s. My biggest disappointment was in the late 90s, when they said that the WA State Dept of Agriculture would not allow them to send plants to this state.
Be warned about their Ae-Ae. They have a 1-week return option on this plant. So if you're ordering by mail or the net, keep this in mind. But if you are local and can pick up a healthy large size specimen, it may be worth it. Particularly, if it's a true 5-footer, i.e., measured from the soil to the base of the newest leaf petiole.
Is this what you guys saw?
The Nursery at TyTy: Variegated (http://www.tytyga.com/product/Variegated)
Notice that the pups are in "Monrovia" pots. That a large reputable nusery. Now, comes the question whether the plant came from them or not, eh?

Whatever else that owner may be, he has some minor accomplishments under his wing. Only requirements are that they are kept away from the sun during the hottest part of the day and that they need a lot of heat to thrive. It will not do well where there is frost. So you'll have to bring it in during the cold weather months. I intend to keep mine in a heated greenhouse. You might ask them what they do with their Ae-Aes at their nursery in the winter.
As I said earlier, if indeed this is an Ae-Ae, at 5-foot tall, measured from the soil line to the base of the youngest leaf petiole, not counting the height of the vertical leaf, then at $195, that is a good price.

So would a shade house work? How high would it have to be?
Thanks,

The Ae-Ae could get up to 18 feet tall. So you'd need to allow for the length of the emerging vertical leaf as well. The Northeast side of the house would probably be okay, too. That is, if you have a tall enough house. That way you don't have to put a shade lath over the plant. It's probably only sensitive when they're pretty young. But when they get to be 6 feet or more, they appear to be doing okay without any shade, from the pictures I've seen.

Hey Farmboy,
Not exactly sure where in South GA you are located, but here are a couple of links to a member that lives in Savannah, GA and his success with his AeAe. Just thought it might help if you decide to purchase one. If you do, please be sure to post pics and we all love to see the beautiful AeAe...

Pauly,
I took no offense at all. It didn't even enter my mind. I had the impression that you wanted to know about the Owner of the nursery. That was all. It had nothing to do with the nursery's ads. I'm kinda neutral about their ads. Though maybe, I think they're on the corny side. I don't particularly care to see those guys in there, but I don't mind the women!

lol well being that you have been Married for 44 years i can certainly understand that! sorry for the misunderstanding its so hard to get the exact meanings of what people are saying some times. i have a much bigger vocabulary then i have the ability to convey them in a righting contexts. back on the subject i don't know what the owner of TyTy is like iv never done business with him or her
i can only go buy what iv heard here on the org and over all iv gotten the impression that some people have had good luck with them but that most haven't and this is just observation on my part that looking at his adds hes not trying to appeal to people that are experienced gardeners i think hes going for the novelty of Bananas that in and of it self makes me circumspect and the fact that I'm fairly sure the pic on the front page that hes calling a variegated Banana is a subtle attempt to imply that its an Ae Ae with out coming right out and saying it that seams a bit "scamish" to me but this is all conjecture on my part and if hes on the up and up then i don't think that he has a thing to worry about from my humble if not bumbling opinion

Ty Ty had so many bad reviews on the "garden watch dog", and they tried writing some of their own fake ones to improve their rating percentage. What ended up happening is that Ty Ty got a attourney/lawyer and threatened to sue Daves Garden who operates garden watch dog if he didn't take down all the feed back. You should have read the feedback that Ty Ty got before that, man that was the most worst feed back I have ever read, and I basically think they are crooks after reading all that.
Garden wacth dog is a great resource, check it out before you buy.

While you're there, would you mind if I ask the favor of taking pictures of their 1-year offsets of the 'Texas Star' banana that they have for sale? Preferably, ones that are near a mature plant of the same variety, and even better, next to one that has fruits/blooms.
Although, as I stated before, that I've had no problems with them, I have been hesitating ordering from them because of all the bad reviews they've been getting in the last few years. Even more so now, since I read about Joe Real's experience about his Texas Star not being a Texas Star but a Musa Ornata. Now, I don't know if in fact he ordered the plant from Ty Ty Nursery or was given to him by a friend. But still, even if it just came from a friend, that friend would have ordered it from someone claiming it was a Texas Star.
So, I would really appreciate your help. Also, please let us know what your general opinion of the plant (TX Star) is, and also, their overall customer service.
Thanks,
Chong

First of all, thanks for your response. I am absolutely astounded by their actions. To put items up for sale, and then a couple of weeks later, retract the sale is ludicrous. And to think that you had to drive a half an hour to their place. Man, either they think their product is gold, or they are just plain arrogant. Do you think that maybe you may have said something to piss them off?
Have no fear, one of the members of this board has decided to finally sell his Ae-Aes on eBay and offer to ship this time. The first time around, he was only selling the plants for pick-up. The shipping cost is pretty steep - $55! Here is the link:
VARIEGATED AE AE BANANA! EXTRA LARGE SIZE OVER 5' TALL - eBay (item 250275850318 end time Aug-03-08 16:43:30 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250275850318&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:BID)
There is already one bidder at $99, though.
Now I'll probably never know what a Texas Star banana is really like.
thanks again.

Chong, I have a Texas Star coming to me once it cools off a bit here. I will send you some picks once it arrives. It is not from TyTy so I can only hope it is a real cultivar and not a misnamed banana.

Thanks, Scot,
I would be curious about it. When you say that they do not come from Ty Ty N, do you mean it comes from another nursery in GA? If they are, the chances are that they are the same ones from Ty Ty because I believe they are all owned by the same people. Though I am surprised that you were able to buy just one. Unless, of course, if you bought other plants with it.
Is the source a secret?
Anyway, congratulations on your move! Hope you enjoy your new home. What part of town are you in? There's lots of Filipino restaurants there! Some are even very low priced.
Thanks again,
Chong
