Anybody heard anymore about the Variegated Basjoo? I'd love to have one if anyone has a pup or can guide me in the right direction. Thanx-Nate:waving:

Nate, I have had one now for a few years. I can tell you it burns really bad in the sun and its very slow to produce pups. I have had one pup on mine for well over a year now and its still no bigger than 2". I did worry at one time when the leaves were coming thru plain green but a re pot into Ericaceous compost seemed to help and now after a week or so the new leaves get the dream markings on them.

There are a couple of pics in my gallery of it.

I have a list as long as your arm of people who are after a pup.

Hello all, I am new to this site and actively looking for a variegated basjoo pup for sale. I am also interested to know if the variegated form of basjoo is truly winter hardy. I live in NYC zone 6-7. My standard M. basjoo comes back strong with mulching. I hope the variegated one will also. Cheers!!:nanadrink:

I bought one late this past summer from forum member varig8 (something like that). He has photos of lots of variegated bananas in his gallery but isn't active here. My top died back but is now growing fine in my greenhouse. The leaves are solid green for now but he told me that they developed the variegation later on (he almost threw away his mother plant). Someone else in the forum sent me a PM reporting of problems getting a replacement plant, but mine seems okay thus far. I don't anticipate having any extra pups for a few years, if ever. You might try contact him, though. It was not cheap, but I was in a spending mood trying to stimulate the economy! ;)

Varieg8 ( Stephen ) sometimes sells on ebay too. He is not selling any plants until spring.

He does have some amazing plants though. And very good prices too.

Stephen eBay account is at eBay Seller: miamimax1: items on eBay.com (http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/miamimax1_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ)

The selling history shows a Giant variegated 'Tanna' which is a plant I had almost bought from him directly but its cold hardiness was uncertain (it reportedly is a high mountain banana, though). I was also afraid that it would get beat up too much by the winds since it's a huge banana. Stephen sent me photos of a few different bananas. His gallery here is one really worth checking out.

He has a web site also but, the last time I tried, the e-mail address linked to that site is no longer valid.

Hope that helps,

Harvey

Thanks for the info. I looked at the Ebay site and history and found the variegated musa listing as "musa Bulggoe" giant indonesian banana. Not currenly being offered though and no mention of cold hardiness. I have sent him a message requesting additional info. :woohoonaner:

I may be wrong guys, but from what I gathered from my friends in Bkk, the 'Giant Indon' Variegated is supposed to be a variegated form of Musa balbisiana. When I asked how it got to be in Indonesia since it is not found there, they have no answer. This plant then found its way to Thailand, same as the Indon Red aka Siam Ruby. I have 2 of these plants now from Bkk costing me only 1,000b each, which is approx $28. This was a special price from a close friend.
The other plant which I got for the same price is the Thai Gold/Yellow variegated which is actually a Musa acuminata subsp siamea originally found in the wild. Apparently this plant's seeds germinate to a good percentage of variegated seedlings.
During the last few years there have been a lot of exotic plant trading between Thailand and Indonesia. The Indons were way crazy about the Thai Aglaonema hybrids and foliage anthuriums. Many weird stuff exchanged hands for crazy prices. It's good in a way because as a result of the exchange of plant materials there were a few new hybrids of the aglaonema made with the Indon species.
