Hmm, date didn't work on last one, but its today, 7/11/08.
Now I just need to know when they will start adding height. Do they grow upwards or do they only grow by adding new leaves? At this rate, to get 10 feet tall it'll need 100 leaves.

Great looking basjoo banana. It is growing nicely. All bananas grow by adding new leaves which increases the height of the pseudostem. You'll be surprised at how quickly they can roll out a leaf and increase in mass. Each leaf should get larger in size, and this will help the corm (root) get larger and more developed.

I haven't grown Basjoo, but my tall banana varieties (Orinoco and Ice Cream) really accelerate. Once you start getting big leaves, it will feel like a whole new ballgame.

Awesome wxman! It's really healthy. My basjoo finally is getting better. I saw another leaf coming out this morning. However, the other basjoo is not but was told that it will recover.

Very nice Wxman! I remember when you first posted the photos of your beds / palms & bananas over on gardenweb! Your Bananas were soooooo small! They are really starting to put on some good growth now. I cant wait to see how well everything overwinters for you. What are you planning to do for protection? Are yours just regular old Musa Basjoos?
Lookin good!
Good luck with it!

Ya, once those are a few years old you will have a zone 5 banana plantation...lol. looks really good, I am looking forward to seeing how big they are by first frost.

Tim,
I noticed that you are in zone 5 ( as am I but I'm in Canada ). I am curious to know how you plan to overwinter your bananas this winter.
- when do you plan to prepare them for winter? :bed:
- will you be leaving them in ground?
- if not, where do you plan to store them and how?
- if so, how are you planning to protect them from our nasty winters?
any information would be appreciated. There are some good tutorials here, and some differing opinions. I am curious what you are planning to do.

They will be staying in the ground. I will be putting a 5 gallon bucket filled with leaves over each of them and will see how that works. I plan to do it after the first freeze, and then I'll cut off all their leaves and cover them.

I hate to bust your bubble about your overwintering plans, but I'm in zone 5 too. I did the same kind of overwintering using one of those fake rocks from Menards. The one that's about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. It was filled with nice dry leaves when I put it over a basjoo last year for an experiment. I thought if it worked it'd be a good way to overwinter them without having unsightly bags of leaves and tarps in the yard. It didn't work. That banana never did come back at all. I think they need a larger diameter protected for zone 5.
Regarding basjoo growth.....
Is the only way they grow taller from putting out more leaves, or is there any internal growth where the psuedostem strethes out? I understand the main stem is comprised of tightly wrapped leaves. Reason I ask is that mine are putting out leaves like crazy, but only growing somewhat in height.

Looking good! I will say that if this was a """normal""" summer, those Basjoos would be at least a couple feet taller.
Mine look pretty sad... Even the large corm that was 6 feet last year hasn't even made it that far yet.
Sandy-
I'm tempted to leave my basjoo in the ground (the biggest one)... i just have no idea what is the best method of insulating it... Maybe i'll build a box around it and fill that with leaves and then continue to cover it with snow (what a horrible thought!) this winter (cringes)...

hey everyone, i'm new to this site but had some concerns about my new plant!
i just got a musa basjoo last week in the mail. when it arrived it had 2 leaves on it, one had been clipped (i guess to help it fit in the box) and one was looking beautiful. the third however had brown all along the edges and appeared to be drying out. i decieded to try and trim off some of the brown but after a few days the brown just kept spreading. only about half of that leaf is still green and it is slightly yellow with brown spots. should i just clip this leaf completly?
also a new leaf was shooting up the past few days and was growing about half an inch a day. it is about 7 and a half inches now and is almost completely open. i watered the plant last night and when i woke up i noticed a few small brown spots on the original healthy leaf and 2 small brown spots on the edges of the new leaf.
i think it might be because i watered it too much and did not let the soil dry a full 3 inches down. (i am using a soil of all organic earthworm castings and sand for air and water)
Any suggestions? please help!
also you can see some of the spots on the larger leaf on my main profile picture if you look at it.
