What is a calamondin?

What is a calamondin?
It's a miniature orange. It looks, feels, and smells like a regular orange, but fruits are only 1-inch in diameter and sour. They are used as garnish similar to lemon or lime. Juice makes good hot or cold "lemonade". Hot lemonade is great cure for colds. Or, squeeze several fruits in rum or gin, and you've got an even better cure for colds (Caution-not to be used by minors! Give them the hot lemonade.)

Thank you Chong. Check out my pictures in my gallery. I have a picture where I am holding a fruit that looks like a small orange, but I'm not sure what it is.

Most nectarines are grown by grafting nectarine fruit wood onto a rootstock that is a cross between plum and peach. These rootstocks have great properties, but their fruits are awful. The seeds of these grafted nectarines grow into plants that resemble the rootstock plant.

We can not grow good peaches, nectarines or plums.
In Tampa you can grow these great tasting ultra-low-chill pit and pome fruits:
Dorset Golden Apple. 100 chill hours. Self-fruitful.
Desert Delight Nectarine. Yellow Freestone. < 200 chill hours. Self-fruitful.
May Pride Peach. Yellow Freestone. < 200 chill hours. Self-fruitful.
Burgundy Plum. 150-300 chill hours. Purple flesh. Self-fruitful.
Beauty Plum. 200-250 chill hours. Amber flesh. Self-fruitful.
Chill hours are the duration of hours some fruit trees require to produce a significant amount of fruit year after year. The hours listed for a particular fruit are an approximation, usually obtained by trial and error. To compute chill hours in your yard:
Between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1, the # of hours below 45 F minus the # of hours above 65 F.
Note that this date range only contains a total of 61×24 = 1464 hours.

Thanks..and they all sound oh so good....but knock on wood..I do not get 100 chill hours a year....based on the subtraction formula....I probably wind up with zero chill hours. Inland Tampa probably gets 100 or more chill hours a year...
If you look at a map of Tampa you will see a small Peninsula...I live on this Peninsula (very close to the water) near "Hillsborough Bay"...."Old Tampa Bay" and "Tampa Bay" are the other two bays that surround the "South Tampa Peninsula"
See the pic below.

Over my 1 week vacation that just ended. The citrus had fruit on them already when I purchased them. The average I've seen listed for here is 350 chill hours so I went with the lowest on the apple trees just to be safe. Couldn't you bring that # up artificially though? If you lay something frozen like an ice pack on top of a small layer of mulch it should be above freezing yet under 45F. Also watering once a week with water at 40-45F.
Mexican Lime (moved to 7.5gallon from 3gallon)

Yeah the nursery had slightly larger ones that already had apples on them and they were kept outside. I think the dorsett just barely missed it this year. Hopefully it gets over its transplant shock quickly and does a decent job next year. It looks like they did a good job pruning it as well. I also had a gala seed I was going to graft with the anna but it died at about an inch... I'm thinking too much sun after it moved from indoors :(
BTW I noticed the document said 2.5ft deep. I built mine up a bit because there is clay about 18 inches down and I didn't want water sitting at the roots.

I planted a Gefner Atemoya tree and a Hawaiian Gold Pineapple plant yesterday. I also purchased a young B. Kiew Longan tree that I plan on putting in the ground today. My Pitaya hasn't been planted yet because I am gathering the materials to construct a good support for it. :)
As much as I hate the fact that time flies, I find myself in eager anticipation of spring. I'm expecting a bountiful harvest this year.

i would like to know more about peaches and seeds. I had thought they were like a lot of citrus that can be grown from seed ( Grow Free Fruit Trees (http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2008-06-01/Grow-Free-Fruit-Trees.aspx) )and anyway rootstock should be used for disease resistance.
My big problem with peaches and nectarines are borers. In the coming years I may try to graft onto chickasaw plum since they are resistant to just about anything.

Maybe I am in trouble since I have planted a few seeds from a cold resistant tangerine that did well in Tallahassee.
My neighbor planted a grape fruit that for a while did well. I know you can not import citrus across the state line legally which is really a problem for mail order since I would like to have a Bergamot orange and I am currently looking for one.

Florida also has specific regulations so:
see: Summary of Plant Regulations, Bureau of Plant and Apiary Inspection, DPI - FDACS (http://www.freshfromflorida.com/pi/plantinsp/pi_reg_summary.html)
Division of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry
I would start with your local county extension agent in florida.
NOTE: It is unlawful to move into Florida any and all kinds of citrus trees and parts thereof except by a special permit from the Division Director. Permits are not required to move citrus fruits into the state.
Means you should be able to import an orange and spit the seeds out once in the state and plant them.

Could you be more specific please Richard. I would love to be able to graft Citrus at my home in Florida for non commercial purposes. Shortly after joining here is when I was informed that citrus propagation in Florida was illegal. I believe that posts of Malcolm Manners and conversations I had with SBL both supported this.
I located this Florida State Statute but it appears to only address propagation in Citrus nurseries. I placed the bold lettering for emphasis!
F.S.S. 581.1843 Citrus nursery stock propagation and production and the establishment of regulated areas around citrus nurseries.—
(1)As used in this section, the term “commercial citrus grove” means a solid set planting of 40 or more citrus trees.
(2)Effective January 1, 2007, it is unlawful for any person to propagate for sale or movement any citrus nursery stock that was not propagated or grown on a site and within a protective structure approved by the department and that is not at least 1 mile away from commercial citrus groves. A citrus nursery registered with the department prior to April 1, 2006, shall not be required to comply with the 1-mile setback from commercial citrus groves while continuously operating at the same location for which it was registered. However, the nursery shall be required to propagate citrus within a protective structure approved by the department. Effective January 1, 2008, it shall be unlawful to distribute any citrus nursery stock that was not produced in a protective structure approved by the department.
This is the F.S.S. definition of “Nursery stock” means all plants, trees, shrubs, vines, bulbs, cuttings, grafts, scions, or buds grown or kept for or capable of propagation or distribution, unless specifically excluded by the rules of the department.
This from July 28, 2009 Citrus Growers Forum :: View topic - Best rootstock for in ground tangerine in SW Florida (http://citrus.forumup.org/about4573-citrus.html)
…First off, because of greening and canker diseases, unless you are a licensed citrus nurseryman (with the positive-pressure, sealed, psyllid-proof greenhouses), it is illegal to propagate your own citrus in Florida -- even one tree for your own use. So no one will sell you seeds legally. But grafted trees are readily available at retail, and that would save you a couple years anyway….
Malcolm M. Manners
John and Ruth Tyndall Professor of Citrus Science
Florida Southern College
Lakeland
A few lines later he reiterates
Yes, propagation by any means, in any number, for any reason, is forbidden (federal as well as state mandate)
I also found this but I think it is referring the the production of nursery stock for sale to dooryard gardeners not the dooryard gardener engaging in propagation for himself. Am I wrong?
5B-62.011 Requirements for Citrus Propagation.
Commercial and dooryard citrus nursery stock shall be propagated according to the following provisions unless exempted in Rule 5B-62.016, F.A.C.
(1) Propagative material including budwood, air-layers, cuttings and all topworking material shall be from source trees produced or grown in accordance with Rule 5B-62.012, F.A.C., and for which a Certificate of Source Tree Registration (DACS-08072) has been issued as specified in Rule 5B-62.017, F.A.C.
(2) Budwood shall be taken under the direct supervision of a witness authorized by the Department. Budwood from each source tree shall be wrapped separately. Each bundle shall be labeled showing variety, the tree identification number, and the number of buds counted or estimated.
(3) All propagative material data including topworking shall be recorded on a Source Tree Bud Cutting Report (DACS-08172) and submitted to the Bureau of Citrus Budwood Registration at the time of collection. Persons authorized to fill out a Source Tree Bud Cutting Report (DACS-08172), shall sign a Certification To Witness Registered Budwood form, DACS-08111.
(4) Propagations from each source tree shall be maintained in nursery rows or on greenhouse benches so that each group can be traced back to an individual source tree. Nurserymen shall use permanent tags to label each separate group of propagations with the source tree registration number.
(5) All citrus nursery stock and propagative plant parts shall remain within the approved structure at all times or be moved under protective cover.
Specific Authority 570.07(23), 581.031(1), (3), (8) FS. Law Implemented 570.07(2), (13), 570.0705, 581.031(1), (14), (17), (23) FS. History–New 12-26-06.
And this but again I think the reference to dooryard is delinating three groups:
1. For sale to homeowners
2. For the own use ( research, observation or trialing)
3. For sale to Commercial growers of citrus
I think it is clear they are talking to commercial enterprises when they address the rule to, "nurserymen and growers shall:" and the end product is to be sold.
5B-62.007 Citrus Nursery Stock Certification Program.
(1) It shall be unlawful for any person to propagate or plant citrus nursery stock, which is not produced in accordance with the provisions of the Citrus Nursery Stock Certification Program. Participation in the Citrus Nursery Stock Certification Program shall not imply any warranty on the part of the nurserymen, the Department, or any employee thereof.
(2) Prior to propagating nursery stock (including dooryard, own-use and commercial citrus), nurserymen and growers shall:
(a) Register with the Division of Plant Industry filling out Form DACS-08004, Application for Certificate of Registration according to Rule 5B-2.002, F.A.C.
(b) Make application to produce citrus nursery stock on Form DACS-08066, Application to produce citrus nursery stock.
Applicants must agree to comply with all the conditions which apply to the Citrus Nursery Stock Certification Program as specified in this rule chapter.
Specific Authority 570.07(23), 581.031(1), (3), (8) FS. Law Implemented 570.07(2), (13), 570.0705, 581.031(1), (14), (17), (23) FS. History–New 12-26-06.
I spent awhile looking for this rule or law that addressed a homeowner propagating in his yard for his benefit and not for the sale or commercial use and I could not find it. I seem to recall that I did find it once before and posted it but I can not find it now.
Dr. Manners if you read this would you tell me where the rule/law is? Is it a federal and not a state issue? I checked USDA and DPI.
Thanks,

I have been fascinated with dragon fruit lately. I've never seen the fruit nor tasted it, but I decided to try and grow some. I have some 3-week old seedlings that are tiny. Today, I found this plant on sale at Lowes. It's supposed to have a grafted cactus on the top, but it had fallen off. I paid $1.74. Yea! I love a deal.

I don't know what variety it is. The sticker does not say because the dragon fruit plant is only being used as rootstock to grow the grafted moon cactus. If you look at the green stems of the plants in the picture, you will see hylocereus undatus (a.k.a dragon fruit or pitaya). Most nursery/hardware stores sell this type of plant at some point in the year.

The only thing I actually planted in the ground was a loofah gourd vine. But I did put down a real assortment of seeds to start, including:
* Strawberry corn - forms small red strawberry size ears that you just pop in the mircrowave
* Minnesota Midget Cantalope (for greenhouse growing)
* Sugar Baby watermelon (for greenhouse growing)
* Dead man's finger/ Blue bean tree (decasinea fargesii) - not quite sure what I will do with 15 of these....
Anything weird and wonderful I will try at least once :)

Yesterday was two Montmorency cherries and a Stella cherry.

Was outside working in the driveway building some trellises for a couple of unknown Dragon fruits that I want to plant towards the end of the drive way. The neighbors from a few houses down stopped by on their walk to see what I was building this time. I had some extra potted up Heliconia Rostrata that I gave them, they said they had some potted fruit trees left by the previous owner that they would never plant that I could have.
So I got a grafted jack fruit tree (desperately needs to be out of that pot, but it is putting out new growth) and a carambola. They didn't know what variety either was (the tags have long since deteriorated), but said the the carambola does put out good tasting fruit.
Heres the jack fruit.

I got my hands on a Nepenthes v.ventrata a huge scary man eating plant that terrifies my neighborhood kids, well not really. That is what everyone thinks about carnivorous plants or at least I did, am I the only one?
This was this morning and overnight it caught a spider and a fly, awesome!
http://www.homegardeningworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/1-1024x612.jpg
If you look closer you can identify both the fly and the spider being dissolved by the enzymes of the pitcher. Kind of cruel but not really is just nature. The fact is we all have to eat something that was once a living thing. It does not matter if it was Lettuce, Pork, chicken,____ you fill the blank. (watch Discovery Channel for details)

1 Nectarine 'Red Glo'
1 Plum 'Yellow Sweet'
I have an established Belle of Georgia Peach on far left.
Plum needs a pollinator but many fruit trees are in the neighborhood. Nectarine might be the only pollinator it needs? Still doing my research.
I have owned other pears, plums, oranges, peaches, and apples in the same location these are planted so they should have a good start.

Super dwarf nectarine 'gold' - a true dwarf at only 4-6ft tall bearing full-sized fruit
Funny thing though......the nursery I bought it from had a sign listing all the good and bad qualities (the good far out-weighed the bad), but the one note that caught my attention was the warning to "protect from rain" ???? - and you are selling this tree in a temperate rainforest (which Vancouver is)? Luckily I've converted my covered vegetable garden to more exotic flora so I put it in the ground near my citrus (mandarin, lemon and kumquat) :)

Crabapple, Nutall Oak, Swamp Chestnut Oak, Chickasaw Plum, Mayhaw, Wild Plum from one company, expected shipping Feb17th. I saw this one discussed on the SD Gardener group recently. It was supposed to be featured on the Walter Andersen newsletter, but I missed the article.
Very interesting new variety for our SoCal climate.
I heard that it will pollinate Minnie Royal and Royal Lee, but does it require cross pollinating?

Darkman,
Are you still using well water for your orchard?
Looking good down there!!
Yes I am. It tested at 6.0. I was way overwatering and I have cut back to only watering as needed now. This has been a very wet Spring and just thus month we already have 9" of rain with almost two more weeks left. I have not done the soil testing I need to do but will have excessive time in my hands from now on. As of July 14 I will be retired and I am only working two days a week till then. If needed I will start limimg. I feel like I will have the time to maximize the potential for all oif my plants citrus and otherwise. It will be up to mother nature then and I will see what the trees can do. Since the pictures they have grown exceedingly well and most have filled their allotted space with some exceeding their space. Icut back the Fina Sodea this year as it had grown into the muscadine rows that are planted between the citrus rows and it has a large crop on it now.The muscadines are on six feet tall double Geneva curtain style trellis. This puts them up into the sun and out of the shade of the citrus. It maximizes space and both seem to be happy growing together. I'll have to post a picture of the area now.
