Hi,

First time growing bananas, 3 other plants are doing ok, but this one seems to do this for the third leaf so far.

Thank you!

LOOKS like sun burn. Normal for newly planted bananas. Just check to see if the soil is too wet or too dry

It must be a variety more sensitive than others then... Is it a common practice to shade small banana plants when they're young?

I'm really doubting that this is indeed a sunburn. New leaf is showing the same problem while barely able to see any sun.

My tissue culture was doing the same thing until I cut back on watering. The newest cigar unfurled without an issue, but I'm waiting for 1 more just to be sure. Another member suggested I get a moisture meter to make sure I'm not drowning the plant.

YES ! ... Young plants & TCs like this at a nursery would be in a shade house where the shading would be reduced until full sun and the plant is 2 1/2 ft to 4 ft tall over 3 to 4 months. ... A new pup growing next to it's mother would be under her shade

Looking close at the above picture, I see many small white spots at the base of the cigar leaf and other leaves. I don't see these in the first photo you posted. ... You have a white fly problem. These are sucking insects and will cause the black bruising you see. Spray with a general garden insecticide and treat the ground around the plant/area where the flies hibernate at night..

We can't hide anything these days, can we? :ha:

But honestly, some slow release osmocote with diluted rooting fertilizer. I have sandy poor soil very low in organic matter. When I read that bananas are heavy feeders, that freaks me out.

WOW! Nice catch!

Maybe I should take more photos, but my soil is sandy and I have a feeling that those are sand particles. The dark matter on top is just a tiny compost layer. But I need to look into this, thank you!
