The basjoo that I wrote off as a goner because a rodent or something ate it, it was just a big hole in the ground has just now put up a pup! In July!
is that crazy or what? I just sprayed roundup there last week!

I can, early in the year I threw an almost completely rotted corm from last year on the compost heap and last week saw a little shoot popping out the top. Basjoo's seem more indestructible than captain scarlet :banana_ba

Paula--sounds like your tomatoes are doing better than mine. It's been so cool at night here. I think that's why some of my bananas took so long to come up.
I have been picking lots of tomatoes off the ones in the greenhouse though.
It has been my first year growing greenhouse tomatoes because I overestimated the demand for gallon potted tomato plants this year. So I decided to just grow them out and pick the tomatoes. They are paying for themselves.
But another basjoo story:
I gave Mom a couple of basjoo a few years ago, 3 years to be exact, for mothers day. She really didn't want them! But she put them out.
Dad sprays roundup around everything there, he's really bad about it, and he sprayed around them and they got all brown and died off in the fall of the first year. So she didn't protect them over winter at all, she just mowed her leaves from the yard into the flower bed like usual. Do you know her basjoo came up earlier that next spring then mine did that I babied and covered, and had more pups? I think the key is you have to just not care! She felt sorry for them last fall and covered them and she still has them.

This thread is giving me a lot of hope on my other basjoo which was previously 12" when I planted and now it's like down to 4" and even bent. :D

That is a great story.
I am still waiting for mine to bloom
so I can find out what kind of
banana it is.

I can totally relate.

I divided my first pup and planted it outside in June. It started wilting almost immediately and after a few days, looked completely dead and appeared to be rotting. I was going to rip it out but got sidetracked for a few days.

All of a sudden I noticed a new leaf popping up. I've now got 4. It looks much better than the original plant these days.
