I've just purchased seeds for both red and blue fruiting bananas (if they are and do). I'd like to find out more about the species and how best to cultivate them (I'll be growing them in tubs, I only have a balcony).

Are there more than one common species in each colour? Can you identify these from the photos? (I've got to upload the images to the gallery, bear with me).

Looking into it more I'm guessing Red Dacca and Blue Java - I should probably be looking for the dwarf varieties!

This is very questionable. Eating banana do not or rarely have seeds. Please show a picture of the seeds you have. It's likely you have seeds from an ornamental type or wild type banana. Next the photos of the banana fingers appear to be photo shopped to make the red and blue more brighter & deeper. Google the bananas to the real pictures of the fingers.

Already did that, because it's obvious the photos are enhanced.

Also, eating bananas only don't have seeds if they're the ones favoured in Europe and the US - there are many edible species with seeds around the world.

neither of these varieties put out viable seeds. chances are you are another victim of seed scams.. they run rampant on amazon.. Chances they are even a banana seed are slim to none, but do post pics when you get them.

All bananas are eatable! But spiting seeds is undesirable and many of the wild/ornamental types have a more pulpy texture and generally undesirable. The normal desirable 'eating' desert type bananas are triploid hybrids and are sterile (no seeds).

if it looks like grass seed its probably grass seed. generally banana seeds are a little larger than bb's or larger marble sized. if it looks like grass seed welcome to the club, your scammed.
