After years of waiting, my 'Mandella's Gold' Bird of Paradise has flowered. I grew it from seed. There is already another flower stalk coming up. For those who might not know, the difference is its yellow flower instead of the more common orange.

Actually it took over 6 years from seed to flower. What really helped was finally moving some of the plants from pots to my garden. Once they were in the ground, they started growing quickly and produced a flower.

I have seeds for several BOP's, but don't have the Mandella's Gold. It is surely a beautiful flower and one which I will add to my wish list. I wonder how soon it might have flowered if placed in the garden after its first year? Great job!

mskitty, did you ever get seeds? How did you fare?
For that matter, would anyone like to elaborate on growing Strelitzia from seed.
I'd love to hear success and failure to help with this en devour.
I have been growing Bananas' for quite some time and the wife asked me if I would give the BOP a shot - small lot of Mandella seed to arrive shortly.
They are to be grown as container plants, considering we live in NE PA brrrr for a tropical :( have a nice room for starting and to overwinter my trops, really don't expect to see flowers due to climate but going to put forth best effort, I also realize this takes quit a few years :p

Thoughts, suggestions....

Thanks All ;)

Very nice! I saw the yellow form in Disney World Orlando 3 years ago and they were beautiful, but I went there this past summer and they were gone and replaced! I was really upset, Im not sure why they would replace such a nice and rare color of Bird of paradise. I guess maybe it was the cold that killed them off, but then again, I still see bougainvilleas, bismarkias, and even plumerias growing pretty happily in orlando so I doubt it would be cold enough to kill a Birds of Paradise unless the yellow form is more tender than the rest.
Thanks for sharing! Im sure it was worth the wait!
