View Full Version : Guess the Unknown Variety Contest!
jpfloors

Okay guys, here is another contest. I, nor anyone else has any clue what variety this is. So... lets start guessing!!!! I went out in my yard last week and noticed the newest leaf was slightly smaller than the last, but didn't think anything of it. Now around a week later the next leaf came out, half the size of the previous... so it's flagging time soon! The picture I provided below is the only picture that I will post and the only hint you get to guess the variety. No one in the forum has seen this in peson and size specifics will not be given out. I will make my best attempt to update the guessing at least once every day. Upon closing of the guessing I will begin to post pictures of the progress and give a more in depth description. Now for some rules:
You must be a registered Bananas.org member as of today, 7-2-08 to enter.
One guess per member.
A variety can only be guessed once, yet something such as "dwarf orinoco" and "orinoco" will be considered two seperate varieties.
Any e-mails to myself, MediaHound, or any judge asking for specifics or opinions on the variety will be an automatic disqualification and if a guess has already been made, that guess will be free to be guessed again.
This contest guessing will cease upon MediaHounds discression or when the guesses just begin to just get crazy (eg: truly tiny).
Judges will be appointed by MediaHound and will not be eligible to guess.
When the fruit has ripened each judge will have a few shipped to them and the judges will determine the variety.
The winner determined by the judges shall receive a free pup and possibly some fruit with free shipping to any continental US address, in the case of an international winner, the winner can deem a US friend to receive the pup, or pay for shipping into their country (I would need your help to get paperwork together to prepare for customs in your country).
To help everyone out... also check out this page in the wiki listing all types of bananas that are listed in the wiki! All articles - Bananas Wiki (http://www.bananas.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Allpages)
Happy Guessing!!!

Take a look in my gallery - there are a couple of pictures of Oritos there - the only yellow ripe bananas in my gallery, in fact.
They are shorter than a Cav banana, tend to be round like a broomhandle (not triangular or square), and if you let them ripen naturally they are an unreal yellow colour. The skin is fine and thin, and when the finger is completely ripe it sticks just a little (more as they approach nanner-bread colour). An average hand is about 25 fingers, and there are normally (here at least) ten or so hands on a bunch. The flavour is finer, creamier than Cav bananas, more approaching fine Sedas or Gros Michel, with a firmer, crisper texture.
As soon as the tree is in green-bunch stage, I'd be able to tell you definitively whether it's an Orito. The bunch is quite distinctive - where most bananas throw a barrel-shaped (tapering) bunch with smaller bananas at the bottom and top, Oritos throw a bunch that is tubular (does not taper).

:2788: I wanted to take a moment to tell everyone that hasn't guessed to please do so. :banana_pi I see a lot of names going through the thread but not as many guess's. :0491: I purposely took the picture in the manner that I did; only showing the leaves and making it hard to determine what angle I took the pic exactly, so height and thickness of the p-stem can't really be determined... no one knows whether I have a one story home or a three story home (hence only the top of the roof being visible). :2717: For all anyone knows I could of been 10 ft away kneeling down or 30+ ft away standing up. :twonanners: I planned all of this so that the top experts don't have a way of making a very good educated guess and to make it fair for everyone, so please, check out the wiki page (link below) and take a guess!!! :chefnaner: I'd really hate to see the actual variety not having been guessed!

Hey Sandy! I also thought it looked like Ice Cream, but the rules said only one guess, so I went with Dw Brazilian.
My Ice Cream is sending up it's flag leaf and if you don't get any fruit by the time it ripens, I'll send you some. You may have to wait a couple years for yours to fruit.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11051&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11051)
I first got mine in July of '06, and it is only now flagging 2 winters/3 summers later. Problem is, I just cut off the big pup, so my next bunch of fruit will prolly be delayed as I don't have a fully developed daughter plant for next year. I might get lucky, though...
Good luck!

I think you were about 8-10 feet away from the plant, and were holding the camera at eye level. I think the plant is very close to the house, maybe 2-3 feet away from the roof line and the p-stem height is about 8-10 feet.

Hi all, I'm going to have to end the guessing for this one and possibly also forefit the contest due to Fay damaging the plant and it toppled over. Reffer to this thread for more information and pics for now: http://www.bananas.org/f2/fay-west-florida-landfall-possible-5645-2.html I'm going to try to see if the fruit will ripen but I doubt they will as they were less than two months since the bloom came out. I just started back to school taking 19 credit hours and between that and cleaning up from Fay I haven't had much time to spend here on the computer. I'll update with details later on this coming weekend and pictures from before the storms!

Oh, I'm so sorry! How disappointing for you. Good luck with school; our classes start Monday, and I'm just hoping the roads are navigable by then. Between flooding and falling trees, it's a mess out there.

Sorry 'bout your plants. They looked very nice.
Could you let us know what the plant was? I'm curious to know if my first hunch (but chosen already) was right. Thanks!:lurk:

Sorry I haven't been on here in forever and a day. I just left my business a few months back and entered back into school taking 19 hours, 5/6 science courses... so I barely have even time to breath LOL. Honestly, I never knew what kind it was... the point of the contest, so that a panel of judges including jarred, that were good at identifying could tell me... and have a contest of it for fun. I do have a sister plant that's now about 12-14' with 8' leaves almost and I'm hoping it will flower soon. BUT, I don't know that this is the same var. as this is from a 25 gal pot that I got from the nursery with two seperate rescue plants in it (and their pups) so it could be a different one all together. I think it was ice cream though as the bananas were small (maybe 3-4'). When I get some time I'll post some pics on here of it before the fall. I have to find them. But you can see the day I got the banana in my gallery under "the great unknown."
