I don't exactly _know_, but my first guess would be lack of minerals.

My California Gold did that, first leaf after being stored for winter. I think the cold and being bare-root disrupted the formation of the leaf. They are all fine now, and it even has a flag leaf!

Was the leaf edge brown and burnt while it was rolled up?

It Is Possible The Leave Was Brown On Edge I Dont Remember Seeing That. We Had Very Hot Weather Last Week. I Guess I Will See How The Next Leaf Does .thanks Alot.

The last three leaves on one of my basjoos looks like that too. I'd be interested in knowing the cause and if there is a way to fix it.

Here's a picture

Just today I noticed the next unfurled leaf that is showing looks deformed.

Must be the culprit?

Wonder what causes this?

I'm guessing that some small caterpillar or tiny beetle may cause this to happen. I've seen something simialar on my cannas, though not so much on my bananas. I haven't had any leafroller damage all year until the return of the rains (finally!) about two weeks ago. The leafroller damage began showing up yesterday. They could be the culprit. Do you guys ever notice any leaves stitched together with silk? If not, it's probably some other type of caterpillar.

I Have Never Noticed Any Leaf Stitched Togeter. The Only Thing I Have Seen , Is Most Of The Leafs On This Plant Have A Small Scar All In The Same Place

My Ice creams and Rajapuri did this last year and I fixed it with tea .This year I have had the problems in the same mats but the Ice creams pulled out of it .The Rajapuri are really bad off . I have two plants with flags on em' right now but the leaves are horrible. I even moved some to a different soil type (with more organic material) last year but they have this condition still . It has been much more severe in my plants than those in your pics and it's only in my Rajapuri mats and only in the larger plants.
Some leaves emerge in pieces and some with only the midrib intact.

Ok here is my Nino who has horrible leaf damage. Its not a bug or creature, but what am I doing wrong?

I have several holes in the bottom of the pots and it drains very well, so I dont think I'm over watering. Here's what the whole tree looks like. The leaves come out with this brown area. The brown is stuck together and does not let the leaf unfold and when it finally tears and opens the area dies quickly.

Stumpy, I had two like that on a goldfinger of mine, but not as severe. I unraveled the leaf by hand, the next one had the same damage, but less, and then the one after was alright. I had just fertilized it a week before the perfect leaf emerged with organic (plant tone) 6-6-6 and it seemed to stop doing it all together and three leaves since, it's all good!

Yeah, I think it might be lack of nutrients. My bird of paradise plant made two crumbled leaves like that after being in the same pot without fertilizer for a long time, and leaves look fine again after I repotted to new soil.

I read [1] that bananas need fertilizer with a 3-1-6 ratio, for example 6-2-12. They need a lot a K2O (potash dioxide). I thought that helpful, although the authors seem to regard only balbisiana and acuminata.

Thanks for the good suggestion guys. I'll do just that- add more potassium.

A couple of my basjoo sometimes do that..I dont know why, they are well fed. It may just beone of those things.

On the second thought I think low temperature plays an important role why the leaves are abnormal and have partial brown spots and maybe nutrient deficiency and maybe bugs play a part but overall all of my bananas recover when the temperature gets higher at night. Now all of those abnormalities are disappearing and being replaced by normal healthy leaves. On some of them, you can't even tell anymore what they have been through.
I guess we are just overly concern because they look ugly and sick.
They are tough bunch.

I'm asking the experts. Is there any chance this is a fungus like Black Sigatoka Disease or any others. I just can't figure out why it is effecting only 2 of my 7 bananas. I now have a second banana that the new leaf coming out has it also. All plants are fert the same and watered the same and get about the same sunlight. All potted plants were potted the same way. With rocks on the bottom and a manure/topsoil mixture. Also it is so far just in the potted plants, it has not affected any of the ones in the ground. Thanks

Tony,

I was doing some research on nutrient deficiencies in bananas in that site I just posted this afternoon (Pest and Disease of Bananas) and I was reading about Boron and Calcium deficiency. I remembered this post of yours. Boron deficiency looks like it could be the problem to me. Check out the site when you get a chance. Here is the link to a Power Point presentation found on that site. http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/nelsons/banana/ripeningbunchmanagement.pdf

For the link to the entire site see my post from earlier today. Hope this helps you.

Seems like others have posted with photos of banana leaves with only a midrib and no leaf blade. That appears to be caused by Calcium deficiency (unless you actually see grasshoppers or caterpillars!). Everyone should really check out this web site as it has a lot of great info.

Please tell me what is a good source for Boron and Calcium that you can buy from a plant nursery or store? Anyone?

Bananaman88
07-10-2008, 01:18 PM
Calcium and Boron are both considered micronutrients and thus needed in very small amounts. It's usually easier to purchase a fertilizer with micronutrients already added in the proper amounts. Micronutrients can wreack havoc when they are too low and can do the same if they are overapplied.
