Hi, I am a new member who recently bought a house with Banana plants in the backyard. I have no idea what kind they are or what to do with them. I saw yesterday that we have baby bananas growing and while I'm excited, I am also perplexed as to where to begin. I have 2 areas of plants and the tallest are about 12 feet tall. One is currently blooming and the other bloomed in October when we moved in but they were black by the time we saw them. They were pretty big and we thought they were plantains, but we don't know. I know from reading on this site that we need to cut that one down. Any help is appreciated!

Are the banana's 3 sided? If so they may be Orinoco's.

I'll take a look, I think they might be. It's raining right now and I have to climb through all the philodendrons to get to them. LOL

Two questions: Why are there so few bananas when it looks like the flower was very large?
And as far as Orinoco goes, we have a three sided banana that came from Mexico with n o name, but very much liked by the grower who sold them commercially. Claimed it was a dwarf, but gets to 8 to 9 foot to top of pstem, plus leaves. Is it likely to be orinoco?

The weather and time it bloomed may have something to do with that. I usually only get 3 to 4 hands, but my plants get dug and replanted and not are in the best zone for tropical's.

It may be an Orinoco.

The history of the home will tell you..

Older people equal older plants which were easily obtainable. n the 70-80"s
Not a bad thing but the plants are seemingly harder to get 20 years later.

Just like landscaping up north(me) the plants in the garden will tell tell you the age of the occupants of the home you purchased.

Older messy mats of plants that seem to have been there for a long while..could be Musa Orinoco which were the most common plant available years ago in the big box stores......not a bad thing.
Newer smaller plants in a manicured garden were probably purchased at a big box..

I have been wrong before though.

But your cleaned up mats look like you have could be the same.

Once your backyard plants fruit, flower and mature a real identification can be made.

You have a great space to grow plants.:woohoonaner:
